Dear everyone,
As some of you may know we have two young kittens at home.
One of them is very attached to me and he has a very bad eyesight. We think he does see difference in lighting or something, but even about that we aren't completely sure. He either has very bad eyesight or he's completely blind.
I did came up with toys that make sounds, warm cushions with different textures for him to feel and I make sure I don't make any unsuspected noises. I allways talk to him before I pick him up so he won't get frightened. Also, I put all things that could cause him harm out of the way. He basicly is my baby
He is with me at all times, he won't leave my side. When I go to the bathroom he waits outside the door, he goes to bed with me (never had a cat who did that before), he lies on the floor or on my lap when I am typing. He's allways there
.
Has anyone had a blind kitty or a kitty with a bad eyesight? Do you have any tips?
Things they specificly hated or liked, or just a fun anekdote would be fine aswell. If you have pics, I would love to see them!
Thanks in advance for your trouble!

You are doing a wonderful job with your kitty!!! I had a Siamese that was so badly abused that she was very close to blind. Apparently the previous owners had hit her hard in the head which created a skull fracture which in turn diminished her vision.
She worked hard at being a normal cat, and she did adjust well to being nearly blind. We didn't move furniture etc so she would be able to get around okay. She even would try to hunt! We would hear thumping at night and couldn't figure out what was going on...until.
One night my Mom and I were sitting in the living room watching television when suddenly KoKo my nearly blind Siamese jumped off my lap and raced across the living room. Suddenly a mouse went scooting by my feet, then my Mom's feet. KoKo was hot in pursuit! Unfortunately KoKo ran head first into the television stand. She sat a moment to get her bearings; while KoKo got her bearings, the mouse sat about two feet away and patiently waited for KoKo to recover. When KoKo stood up the chase was on again. When KoKo ran into another piece of furniture or got tired she would sit down, and the mouse would stop and let KoKo rest and the chase would start again. This went on for about thirty minutes then the mouse disappeared and KoKo returned to my lap. This would happen every night until KoKo passed away. She never caught her friend the mouse, and friend mouse never let KoKo get discouraged about her disability. Mom and I referred to the mouse as KoKo's aerobics instructor!

What a lovely story, Loverbear! It was really touching to hear about your siamese playing with her mousefriend and how she came into a loving home after being so badly abused by her previous owner. It's good to hear she still got around to doing a lot of things, as my kitten is doing aswell.
I am glad to have a loving and warm place for him and I'm sure he will become just as happy, even though he is visually challenged. Thanks again for reponding!

I think you are doing your best to accomodate a pet who has a bad eye sight. You are taking harmful objects that can harm him out of the way and reassuring him when he is frightened. I don't think that you could much else! Did you consult a vet about him? I never had a kitten or a cat in my life since I prefer dogs.

Thanks Ronaldinu. He is due to get one of his shots soon, so I was thinking about combining the two things when going to the vet. So far he seems to handle himself well, so I see no point of getting an earlier appointment for him. I do think that's a good piece of advice, as the vet might have some good tips on taking care of him aswell.
What I do know is that the blindness is most proberbly caused by something inherital that can only be inherited by male specimen. I have his sister at home aswell and she doesn't have it, but his other brother does. This all adds up.
The vet of his brother told the owners it was a inherital diseasse, we haven't got the green light yet that he has this also but the odds are high.
