Do you like islands?

I bought a page for each day calender that is called 'Islands'. It makes me feel happy when I see a photo of a tropical island on it. It is a really lovely thing to have on my desk that that inspires me when I am writing. I love islands in the sun with white sand beaches and gently waving palm trees. I have been to French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji, Hawaii, the Maldives and the Seychelles. Do you like islands? If so which type? Have you visited any islands? If so which ones?

OK, lets see... I've been to ... Mauritius, Comores, Bali, Java, Singapore, UK (which technically is an island), a few of the Greek islands and Alkatraz ... hmmm... I think that is about it for islands really. Mind you I do also love the tropical islands - the sunshine, sunsets, sea, etc... my first love is a tropical island. Violetdreams

Wow! You have been to Mauritius and the Comores Violet Dreams so that must have been amazing. There is nowhere as pretty as a tropical island with palm trees in my mind. The first tropical island I went to was St Lucia in the Caribbean. Cape Town has Robben Island so I hope to go there.

Yeah, I was lucky. I used to work in South Africa as a Travel Agent and we used to get Agent trips which meant that I got to go to Mauritius with about 15 other Agents and stay in 5 top hotels, get squired around the island and altogether have a blast for a week and it was virtually free of charge! Comores I went to in 2001 on my honeymoon. It is just the best place for a honeymoon. In fact the week we were there, there were 40 honeymoon couples at the hotel (there is only 1 hotel on the island). We had planned to go to Mozambique and stay in a hut on the beach, but then they changed the charter flights and the dates no longer worked for us as we had to fly back to the UK a week after our wedding! Maybe next time we go down that way...

Oooooh - forgot. I also went to Hawaii (big island) and Maui way back when in 1992/3.

Dear friend, I do like islands, I liked it when I visited Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and it is another beauty of nature and hope each islands has its own beauty. I hope this beauty is projected because of water surrounding to it. A close combination of natural water and natural land.

Hi my friend Shamrack. Wow! The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sound amazing. I would so love to go there one day. I like to hear about places that are protected because they stay unspoilt. I went to some islands in Belize that I loved and the water around one of them was a protected spot due to the manatees.

Shamrack, where are Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

I have been to Vancouver Island and I used to live in England (also an Island) when I was very small. When I was in my teens, I did those paint by number paintings of those tropical islands with the swaying palm trees. I have not been to any tropical islands though. I would not mind going to Hawaii, but with my husband having a stroke, I am afraid I will be unable to get to it.

You really should go to Buchart Gardens near Victoria. They have tours there and they are child friendly. And another place in the Victoria is the Wax Museum. Plus there is the aquarium. I am sure your toddler would love it and you can get a ride by horse and carriage as well.

I would love to go to Vancouver Island. I have heard Victoria its main town is a bit English in appearance. The north of it is meant to be quite rugged. My toddler son has spina bifida and he is likely to be in a wheelchair when he is older. I will still go traveling but some places like tropical islands will be challenging. Good luck to your husband's health. I like the sound of the paintings that you used to do.

A few years ago we went to Norfolk Island - which is a few hours' flight from Sydney (in between Australia and New Zealand). It was absolutely beautiful - friendly people, historic sites and lovely beaches. Very, very peaceful, and a perfect place to go if you want to chill out, enjoy the scenery and not feel hassled by phones ringing and all the day to day intrusions of everyday life. Norfolk Island has duty free shopping, and the little shops in the main part of town have some incredible bargains in perfume, clothing, shoes and most surprisingly, Lego (which is apparently cheaper there than where it's made).

When I was in Australia I saw some pictures of Norfolk Island. It sounds like such a beautiful and unspoilt island. I would love to go there but I know the flights there and the accommodation would be expensive. The beaches and historic sights would delight me. The shopping sounds great, Lego cheaper than in Denmark! I have heard of Lord Howe Island as well. I am sure it is lovely there too.

I haven't been to Lord Howe, but it does look beautiful. I'd probably be able to talk my husband into going there ... no crowds!

I lived in Samoa for 6 years and have also been to the Cook Islands namely Rarotonga and Atiu and twice to Hawaii - my best friend lives there. I love the Islands and still miss living there. You don't need much to live on and you make do with what you have. The most exciting parts were when we spent the weekends at a beach resort - what a life!

Hello my friend. I also like islands, we have here in the Philippines the famous and stunning Boracay Islands and Camiguin. Both has pure white sand with clear blue water. I suggest you visit them when you happen to come to Philippines in the future.

You are certainly an ' island lover '. You have been to at least 7 of them. That is certainly great. Although I like to visit picturesque islands, I haven't the opportunity to visit many.Apart from my country, I visited ' Bocas del Toro ' in PANAMA.This is a fancy island where you have to access it by a boat.It sits by itself in the PACIFIC OCEAN. What a beautiful sight it is at night to see the surroundings with its glistering lights and the contours of the city. Keep up the excitement. It is a way to spent your time.I am looking forward to do some traveling in the near future and also to take some photos of nature's scenic surroundings.

Islands are lovely indeed. They give you a sense of one on one with the surroundings. You can also feel the horizon looming large and clear, right in front of your eyes; a perfect place to visualize a miniature globe giving you a right perspective of the direction and context.

I do love lovely pictures of islands too and in particular the islands of the Maldives look stunning - one day I will visit them! There is a great book called '100 islands to visit before you die' made by the BBC which I would like to get hold of.
