as far as i know that tears come out while chopping onions is due to releaase of some chemicals by onion. we can avoid tears by cutting them inside water.

First is to cut the onions with a very sharp knife because you will crush fewer r onion cells that produce the gas that causes the tears. Cut near on open flame. your gas stove is best. Chill the onion 15 to 30 minutes before cutting it. This web site give a good example on how to cut up an onion with fewer tears. http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/10/24/how-to-cut-an-onion-with-fewer-tears-a-photo-tutorial/

Don't worry, it is very simple. Peel off the onions, and then cut them into halves. Then soak them in water. make sure they are fully inside water for 10 minutes. Then take them out of water, and cut them. you will not tear anymore. Try this today and tell me. You can also put a chewing gum in your mouth while cutting onions, for extra precaution. That also prevents you from tearing.

i use to make alot of things that had onions in it where i worked and i leart a trick that i now use at home - it works with out fail (for me at least lol) no tears - keep them in thr fridge of chuck them in the freezer for about 20 min before you cut them. the reason you cry is the vapors/gas that is released when you cut them. when you cool them to fridge temp it stops them from being able to make the gas and keeps it liquid. i hope this works for you and any one else as well st it has for me :)

I soak them in water about 5 minutes before i peel them, then i put them back in after peeling so when it's time to cut them my eyes don't get all teared up. I have proven this a lot of times and i know i have shared this to a friend here before. My family has a business that deals with roasted pig or "lechon" in our language and this comes with a sauce that has lots of onions and garlic in it. So, i chop onions and garlic very often and not just some pieces but sometimes half a kilo of them. I do that also with the garlic, so my fingers won't get burned, because we know garlic gives our skin this burning sensation. Happy chopping/slicing.

The water trick works, or burn a candle next to you. This burns the fumes before they hit your eyes!

soak them in water first. somehow this will ease the "sting". I use to soak mine for a good 15-30minutes. before chopping them. hope that helps.

i read somewhere that putting the onions in the freezer will help get rid of the gas that causes you to tear up. For me it's really weird because sometimes i start to cry but sometimes i don't. Good luck with your onion problem Hope you find a technique that will help you get rid of this problem.

My mom taught me this and I hope it will work for you too, when I am cutting onions she told me to put a bowl of water beside me. I don't know exactly what the water is doing, but sure that it worked for me.

I always use a food processor so that I don't have this problem. Don't know if this is an old wives tale or not because I've never tried it but I heard once that if you cut the onions under running water that you won't tear up.

I have tried chopping onions and get teary- eyed too. It is the presence of sulphenic acid that is so volatile causes us to cry when peeling onions. Our eyes gets easily irritated with this acid so it is a natural reaction to cry to wash away the acid. Yes, it is right to place onions in the refrigerator before chopping them like a day before you chop it. Chilling them would prevent the enzyme from activating and realesing it into the air. You could also cut it under water or submerge it in water while cutting it to reduce acid release. But in this I am not sure if the nutrients will not be washed away. I prefer putting them in the firdge to maintain its nutrients within the onion. Another way is to cut the root part last since this is where the acid is more concentrated.
