Making money by making cards?

Does anyone have experience of making cards and marketing them? I am asking as I looked into this a bit recently. I played with hand painted cards (less outlay in printing costs, and opportunity to test market, I thought). Not an easy market. Looked into printing and got various options. Interestingly we don't have Etsy or RedBubble in the UK...or, it seems anything like them. (Opportunity for an entrepreneur here perhaps!) But more seriously, even Etsy and Redbubble seem to me to pass on very little to the artist, taking most of the mark up in their basis cost of production, which effectively means the end product would be overpriced if the artist added anything much to it. I guess the upside of that is that the artist does not have to worry about marketing or advertising. But it looks to me a bit like vanity press more than anything that could generate serious income. So . if you ahve tried marketing cards, what marketing system did you use? And how successful was it?
