OK, so I'm a grammar nazi (as they say). There's this ad on MyLot that's driving me nuts, up the wall, round the twist. Absolutely bonkers. Crazy. Mad. Insane. Loony.
Every page I go to, the stupid thing appears at the top, saying "You've got 1 Message". It's "You have 1 message", darn it. Not "You've got"! Aaaargh!
It means I'll never visit their site. I think I'm beyond all help. ;)

i think that would be fine. It sounds good. And yeah, you just take out the word got, i cant convince myself that it is gramatically wrong coz im not good in checking right grammars. I myself dont care if i am gramatically wrong or right. Hahaha. . But as long as the phrase still have its thought and successfully deliver its idea thats ok.

Your last sentence is absolutely correct, of course. The idea is essential, the understanding is essential - everything else, as they say, is just gravy. It still drives me nuts, though. And it's on this 'add a comment' page now, too. *screams*

Pardon me, I am a bit behind but if you spell it out it says: You have got 1 message since you've is just a shortened form of you have. So that being taken into consideration, wouldn't "you have got one message" be correct?

Indeed. The way I was taught (and strictly stick to in my grammar nazi-ness) is that "have got" is a repetition. It's like saying "I did did". The "got" is unnecessary and - to my sad, rule-following mind - ugly. Like I said, I'm beyond help. lol!

It's probably not the worst sentence... it's just the one I see most frequently! Thinking of being a grammar nazi, here's an amusing thought: the best editor I have ever worked with, who had a quite remarkable control and understanding of grammar, had a very German-sounding surname. I always hesitated before calling him a grammar nazi (though he would never have taken it badly)! Funny how such things are engraved upon our relative cultures.
