I was just curious as to how many people actually home make birthday cakes for their kids. My son just had his 10th birthday and made me think of this. I have been making cakes for my 8 kids for the last 12 years. So does anyone else do it or do you buy the fancy themed cakes from the store? Just woundering.

My son just turned five last month and I made his birthday cake from a mix. I was going to order him one from the HyVee bakery like I have for the past 2 years, but I didn't have enough money to pay for one that week. I think I will probably make his cakes more often because he never has actual birthday parties (his birthday is 1.5 weeks before Christmas and he doesn't have any friends). Maybe if we have a birthday party for him I will order a cake since I don't do the best jobs on icing and decorating. Otherwise, I think I will bake him cakes for his birthday.

I only remember buying one store bought birthday cake and that was for my son's first birthday. It was one of those little round 2 layer ones that would only feed a few people. He tore right into it. Made a mess. Since then though I have been making my own cakes.

I think that I may have purchased a cake or two over the years but I generally make all the birthday cakes. My kids like being able to choose the flavor and frosting. I generally make a round two layer cake.
Eight children?!! That's a heck of a lot of cakes!!
