What is the Watergate scandal about?

Why is the Watergate scandal so important in American politics that it is mentioned quite often in movies? What was it all about? Why Nixon had to resign because of this scandal? As American politics is foreign to me, I find it hard to understand such things. But still I think it is a must to have some basic knowledge what went on in this scandal

What they all said. Basically not only was the President involved in illegal wiretapping but also in attempting to cover it up.

Richard Nixon was simply spying on the other party to keep tabs on what they were doing. He didn't do anything that a lot of other Presidents have done before and after him. Nixon was exposed in this for the simple reason some very rich people wanted him out of office. I know some on here remember him trying to get a price freeze on everything to control inflation. When he did this he scared the H*ll out of a bunch of large investors. They make their money off inflation. You don't seriously threaten the future profits of this bunch and live to tell about it. Instead of having him killed like they did JFK they disgraced him to a point he had to resign the office. Nixon's only crime was he knew about the spying. The big money people wanted someone in the Presidents position that would play their games. In other words help them to make a lot of money. This is exactly the position Bush has held for the past 8 years. He has made a lot of people a lot of money. Personally I think it is time we had one huge nasty investigation to expose exactly who is involved in our economy problems now. This has all the ear marks of a planned economy crash. The American people need to know the truth about it.

Bush didn't replace Nixon...Gerald Ford did.

Are you saying that Gerald Ford played their game? Nixon was guilty of a lot of things as my response below indicates. He didn't just know about them, he participated in them.

I don't really understand it. I know that a lot of people can say more about it because they were around while it was happening, but it was before my time, so I have no idea. I was born during Jimmy Carter's presidency. I never really paid that much attention to the Watergate part of history and I should do some of my own research on it so I can get caught up and watch some movies!

In a nutshell, Nixon gave his okay for some guys to break into the Democrat's headquarters . The guys were caught and cover-up began.it was the first time a president was caught doing something illegal.Instead of being impeached, he resigned. It was in the 70's. Vietnam was dividing the country and then there was this.Nixon was the first president that everyone had low regard. He was a sybol for the young that older people could not be trusted. And for older, conservative people, he was the biggest disappointment. He was a Republican president. He was in the seat of power and he threw it all away. What is the legacy of Watergate? Every president since Nixon isn't put on a pedestal. And there are members of the press looking for a scandal to report.Americans have been more cynical about the president. Are you going to see the movie Frost Nixon? If so, you will see how people felt about Nixon. In the movie , he said he was sorry that Watergate had made young people who wanted go into politics think that All people in government are corrupt.A good movie to see is All The President's Men. It shows how the cover up of Watergate was revealed.

Well I still don't understand the whole thing even after it has been explained to me several times. I still think more went on there than anyone wants to admit to. So you will probably never get the real story.

It sounds a complicated story to me but it seems really intriguing

I think most of what it was really about was kept a secret. Lots of people will mention it, but you never hear them say what it is. I think it has something to do with money and stealing it or hiding it. The true story will always be a mystery.

Basically Nixon ordered the beakin of the Democratic Headquarters. It's far more involved, but that's it.

ANd if we were to know too much into it, we will be taking sides but not really considering the pros and cons of things happening ^_^

Nixon had people spy on the Democratic Convention. He was a Republican and wanted an edge--he was also paranoid and had a long list of enemies that he kept adding to. It's significant because it's the first time I can remember any party getting caught doing dirty tricks but it's definitely not the last time it's happened. Both parties have learned to be more careful and the scandals you see that are made public are just the tip of the iceberg. Our politicians are selling our country out for their own gain and the people won't stop them. In fact, the worst ones keep getting re-elected!

Hi ronaldinu, Oh it has been so long ago, and I didn't really understand American politics or English politics, still don't but I think it is about phone tapping or some sort to find out information and few people got caught. Tamara
