Aren't there now 51 states (57 if you are a stressed Obama!)?
I'm not American, so I doubt if I could name them all (and wouldn't know all of the capital cities of each). Running from left to right and more or less vertically, here is my list from memory (with capitals when I can remember them):
Alaska -
Washington - Seattle?
Oregon - Portland
California - Sacramento
Wisconsin -
Oregon -
Utah - SLC
Colorado - Denver?
Nevada - Reno
then there's a whole slew of states down the middle which I don't remember ...
New Mexico (?) and Texas (Dallas) are somewhere in there in the South
From there on, it gets hazy ... Ohio, Mississipi, Missouri are somewhere in there, then Kentucky. Michigan is up there like a glove round the Great Lakes (with a bit the other side of L. Michigan). I think its capital is not obvious - Flint, not Detroit, as you'd expect. Illinois is somewhere below it and I have a feeling that Chicago is not the capital, either!
From there going east, I know where Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) and District of Columbia (Washington) are and maybe New York State but the rest of the names are a jumble. Florida is easy to place (but I don't know the capital) and then above it are Georgia (Atlanta) and a lot of smaller Appalachian states whose names I know but couldn't point to on the map.
I know that Maine is right up there in the north and has a good seacoast and some pretty country.
I think that's pretty fair for an Englishman who has only been to the US once and knows Europe only a little better!

You've done really well, better than a lot to Americans, I'd bet. There are currently 50 States. Some corrections: Washington's capital is Olympia, Oregon's capital is Salem. Carson City is the capital of Nevada. Texas' capital is Austin. Lansing is the capital of Michigan. Springfield is the capital of Illinois, and Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania. Right on for Utah, Colorado, California and Georgia.
Capitals of the states mentioned: Juneau, Alaska; Madison, Wisconsin (just south of Michigan); Santa Fe, New Mexico; Columbus, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; Jefferson City, Missouri; Frankfort, Kentucky; Albany, New York; Tallahassee, Florida; and Augusta, Maine. Washington, D.C. is nation's capital.
Do not mean to offend with giving right answers. As I said, you have done much better than some Americans could do!
And a lot better than I could name the provinces (or counties) of England!

Oh, and Honolulu, Hawai'i and Boise, Idaho. Idaho is directly east of Washington and Oregon, and directly north of Utah.

Hello snam23! I am not from the USA so I don't memorize the US states but I know some of them. I will try to enumerate the states that I knew.
1. New York
2. Florida
3. California
4. Ohio ( I am not sure of it)
5. Chicago (not sure too)
6. Michigan
I known some but I am not sure if it a city or a state.

You are right about Ohio. Chicago is a city in Illinois (and not the capital). You did pretty well! Congratulations!

Not to brag, but I can still name all the US states and probably all their capitals. I learned them 50 years ago and for some reason, it has stuck.

I still remember some but not much. How many US states and capitals do you know? Do you know all 50 of them?
