Ever go to work for nothing?

Substitute teaching, sometimes they call you and then school gets canceled. That's twice it's happened to me now. Today and once a few years ago. I guess 2xs in years isn't bad. I remember getting to where I was supposed to teach and hearing them cancel. The buses had been ready to unload the kids, they had to turn around and bring them back. Today, I was called for the afternoon. But when I arrived, there was no one there, so there was no afternoon. So have you ever gone to work for nothing?

You must live someplace cold and snowy. The news reports show some horrible weather. Here in Miami, we know when hurricanes are coming, and they tell whether schools are open or closed constantly. I sort of figured that sort of thing happens everywhere. Guess not, but you'd think they'd want to let families know if the kids needed to be cared for at home. You're right, though -- twice in all that time is pretty good.

Snow, not a problem, I have snow tires. Slush, can drag, just have to learn the correct speed for your slush. Ice, BIG PROBLEM, unless you have chains on your tires, no way to overcome it and unless you have a garage with a lift, hard to get them on and off. So the last one is the only problem. Watching the news doesn't always help. They may or may not have the weather indicated on the news. Yesterday was supposed to be 34 degrees, never got above 18 here. This school district is sooo huge, there can be three different weather zones, esp. the weird way the northern weather dips an icy finger down and the southern weather can have a hand around it. Not sure if we still get students from Canada and Vermont since 9/11 attack. But we used to get island students from VT and some from Canada. NY State school, but sometimes you'd never know it.

I guess I'm asking for a neat little ribbon to be attached to a great gift, when there's no reason at all to think anyone can control the weather. I'll try to remember that, too, in a couple of days when the forecast calls for high 80s. Now it's in the mid-70s and that's quite a relief from the oppressive heat. Except for having to go outside and driving, I guess cold weather could be good. After all, you can always put on another layer!

If I lived where the weather is so often a problem, I'd probably be glued to the weather reports. Actually, I check on them constantly, even though the weather in Miami is quite stable. I leave for work well before daylight, so I want to know what to expect later in the day. I know millions of people do it, but I think I might be afrais to drive in snow and ice and slush!

Yes this has also happened to me a couple of times. I work for a golf course and we are open all year. I was scheduled to work on a Sunday morning, my usual hours, and when I got there all the doors were locked and nobody was in the building. I called my boss but she wouldn't answer. Went back home and I was so frustrated. One simple call would have stopped me from getting up early and driving to work. We also have an indoor ice skating rink but it wasn't open either. Both sports go all year.

That was my question...lol This happened to one other employee also. Am thinking because the other employee and myself live very close to work so it wouldn't be much of an inconvenience if we did show up for our shift or the boss didn't care. I work for a company that is not very well organized.

Ours don't go all year. They knew you were scheduled, why didn't they call you?

If they aren't well organized and no one is responsible to call anyone, then they're lucky to have you. Most places like that, the responsible ones quit.

No, but my husband has. He has to get up at 4:00 am every morning and there was about 5 days last month where he got up to go to work and there was no work because of the weather. He works in construction as a plumber.

They don't have anyone who calls the people to tell them? 5 times is a lot in one month. Seems like they could have some kind of system set up, like one guy calls another guy who calls the next guy, etc.

I know, right? Well the foreman on that job was driving from his own home 45 minutes away just to let everyone know not to come in once he got there. It was a good thing that my hubby only lives about 15 min away.

Yes, the doctor I work for used to have an office in each of 3 different towns. One is about an hour's drive from my home. Once or twice, I had only one appointment at that office and drove all the way up there, only to get a call on my cell phone that one of the secretaries "forgot" to call and tell me my appointment was cancelled. What a waste of time and gas! You must have gotten pretty annoyed with your situation. I can't imagine that school would get canceled, unless it's a snow or hurricane day or something. It makes you wonder why the school district would ask you to sub if there was a chance they were just gonna cancel classes anyway.

Exactly, they said their would be a snow storm forcast. But it wouldn't be bad until the afternoon. So it's confusing to say the least. One appointment and one hour drive, I bet you were even more annoyed. Mine was 20 mins drive (on a good day, this was over 30 minutes). Was supposed to be for the afternoon although I had to go in early to get my assignments and so on from the teacher, so I was to be there by 11:15, I was, they weren't. Thanks and take care.

Interesting point, Teachers who don't care work for nothing. Hopefully the students care and make up the difference. Thank you very much for joining Mylot. (1) you're brand new here. Hope you enjoy your stay and check out some of my other discussions as well as some of my friends. Take care.

I did once. I worked in a call center. I wanted a promotion. I got up went in early for training. It was unpaid. I worked 3 hours before my actual schedule for free. I did alot of work. I got the promotion for about 2 weeks. Then they gave the job to my supervisors girlfriend. I wouldn't make that mistake again.

I'm sorry that the old who you know and not what you know (nepotism, I think it's called) got you. We have that problem up here, too.
