When you say he playes with them does he hurt or kill them? If so it's a good time to teach him that insects can feel pain also. If he's just interested in them start to teach him about them. Ants ae one of the most interesting insects there are and butterfly are what caterpillers change into how wonderful is that. You have a wonderful time to teach him about these wonders of nature

My son loves insects he is 5 and he cries every time we kill an insect (like anoying flyes that come inside) he sais insects are his friends and collects them in jars and boxes. I dont think there is anything wrong with that as long as they dont hurt him and he does not kill them for no reason.

Well, depending on the age, I think it's ok. Especially butterflies, if he can even catch them. I used to play with all kinds of bugs and reptiles when I was a kid. I remember catching wooly worms as we called them, and putting them in little boxes. I also remember catching lizards and taking them to school for the aquarium in our classroom. And when my dad took me fishing, I spent more time trying to catch tadpoles than I did actually fishing. LOL All of this, and I turned out alright. :) Thanks for starting this discussion and bringing back the memories. Have a great day!

Children have a curiosity about different things. I have a cousin who used to bring little snakes in the house in her pocket! But she grew out of that. She just liked small animals. Lots of children play around with ants, butterflies, other bugs. It's not going to hurt them and one day, they grow out of that need to do those things. Don't worry too much about him; he'll be fine.

Girls are made of "Sugar and Spice an everything nice" Boys are made of "Snakes & Snails and puupy dog tails" I wouldn't let it worry me too much. Boys will be boys. I'v raised two of them and I stopped them from playing with anything that could hurt them but they chased butterflies and watched the ants build their little communities and all tha stuff. My oldest one decided to investigate a yellow-jackets nest one time in an old tree stump. He got out of there quicker than he got in and thank goodness he wasn't allergic to them because he got a few stings for his nosiness! LOL Boys are fun but they'll keep you on you toes for sure!

My granddaughter is four and she loves playing with insects as well. I think it's great. She loves ants in particular because they are so busy. We do of course warn her the ones to be careful of that she can watch but not play with like bees, some beetles. Yesterday we caught a salamander and took pictures of her holding it. We have pictures of her playing with or holding snakes, mice, wild birds. She loves all creatures and spending time with them creates great teachable moments.
