A montreal mother has been charged with murder of her three kids, after she and her husband planned a suicide pact. Her husband died but she survived and called 911, the kids are dead as well. The couple had no job and were severely depressed come this new year. Do you think that parents have the right to kill the whole family when they decide to end it? Do they have a right even to end their own life when they think there is nothing in the world left for them? Do you think poverty can cause a person or couple to go crazy and not think rationally have you ever thought that poverty can drive a family to the limit, depression can be so bad that they don't think clearly anymore?

Mental illness post-it notes - Mental illness doesn't leave post-it notes on the counter announcing itself to it's sufferers saying "HI, I'M HERE, I NEED ATTENTION NOW!"
Mental illness is the principal culprit in this situation. Mental illness is perfectly capable of distorting reality just like viewing it through a cinema screen. Pink elephants can dance across the living room, despite knowing full well there are no such things. * Mental illness complicated with feelings of hopelessness brought on by the crumbling economy and lacking any support system can make this couple feel they've no options to give their children any sort of decent life. * If you have no medical insurance, or have not been to the doctor, you may not know something is off kilter in the chemistry of the brain. Paying out of pocket for medical care with out a job is not always possible. * Mental illness doesn't leave post-it notes on the counter announcing itself to it's sufferers saying "HI, I'M HERE, I NEED ATTENTION NOW!" * The mentally ill brain can feel normal even though imaginary cockroaches the size of dogs can be waltzing across the road. Perhaps if you do not know you have a mental problem to begin with, you may believe the lies your brain tells you.

excellent points only we have universal free health care in canada so at least that was not an issue, but the problem is people that are that depress rarely go for help they are too depressed to do it.

Recognizing mental illness for what it is even if you have it and when your symptoms are ROARING is not always easy either.

I think there are many things that can cause a person to do such a horrible thing. They get so down and depressed that they don't think rationally. I don't think anyone has the right to take a life even if it is their own. Why an adult takes it in their own hands to take a child's life is beyond me, turn the kids over to a family member or a friend then if the adult is stupid enough to take their life at least the children can have a chance to grow up and live their own life.

No, I don't think that parents have the right to kill the whole family for no reasons. I think anyone should seek help before ending their lives. Depression is a very serious issue and it's sometimes over looked. A lot of people expect people with depression to get over it or get medication that sometimes that makes it worse. For example, my husbands grandfather took his own life after losing his wife and son in the same month. The medicines that his doctor put him on gave him sucidal thoughts. Poverty can cause a person or a couple to go crazy and not think rationally. I mean for a person that does work but doesn't make enough to feed his family it's depressing. Most men are raised that they are the bread winner, that if they can't do this that they are not a man. Especially now, I have seen people do drastic things just to pay their bills and put food on the table. I will honestly admit, 10 years ago. I was very depressed, I just lost my brother to murder. My dog that I loved was stolen from me. I felt like everything that I loved was being taken away from me. I was at a very low point in my life and the only way I wanted to deal with it was to end it all. How I snapped out of it, nobody will believe so I will leave it at that. Well, I was still depressed but taking my life didn't seem worth it anymore. So I got help, not from a doctor that would put me on meds, but from talking about everything with other people that was going through the same thing.

Hi winterose, This is very very sad! I have heard a lot of people doing this because of poverty and they don't have hope anymore! But, this is not really the solution..I mean I know it's hard to be in their part but how about asking some assistance from relatives or just try very very hard to find any type of job as long as it is descent! She survived but the experienced of losing her loved ones will be very traumatic! I hope everyone will learn from this news and that they will always think positive as well as try to work hard, live simply and be open to friends and relatives!

Very very sad... that others would let poverty and depression create a monster out of themselves. Yes, no one has got the right to take her own life, what right could she have in taking others? Especially the lives of innocent kids who might have a good future ahead of them if given the chance. All I can say is that poverty isn't the primary reason for these crimes. It's when people lose hope and faith on what God can do to their lives. I mean, look at the animals and plants in the forest, they're not as intelligent as human beings but they continue to grow and exist. God promised He'll never forsake His creations, human beings must have faith on that... Sigh!

Yay, that's horrible.. we don't have the right to kill anyone.. you know, each and everyone of us has his/her own problems but we can never resolve them by committing another mistake.. we can beat depression by drawing closer to God and of course by having our families and friends around.. i,myself, have big problems too but i don't let my problems overpower me..

Yes I do think that poverty can make people do the nuttiest things. If she had wanted to die really die she would have not called but attempted to kill herself again. I don't think I could ever kill someone less much a child whom cannot depend themselves. If they just tried to get help maybe somewhere someone would have helped and they wouldn't have met that tragic end.

Personally, I feel that people need to know their is a way of hope and help for parents who are feeling like this, instead of insisting on taking their own lives, or their kids lives. Yes, the Economy is Bad and many people are suffering. Yes, there are many people loosing jobs, and such and wondering where their next meal is coming from as gas prices are on the rise again and everything else goes up except for wages as well. But until people really know that there is hope and help for them no matter what they are going thru, there will be many more people resourcing to this, and that is the sad part indeed.

Unfortunately as of late with the economy and everything things are getting tough on those of us who have a very limited income. I thank my lucky stars for my friends and family. They keep me sane even when life doesn't LOL!! I think that this poor woman needed help and that some people don't have the mental constitution to deal with everything that comes their way especially if they are depressed and feel that there is no way out. She felt that she was relieving everyone from their suffering when in reality she wasn't. It's unfortunate that this happened and I'm not saying that she shouldn't be held accountable but I'm saying that it's something that happens due to not being able to seek medical attention, not realizing you need mental help, and just plain being stuck in the depths of dispair. I feel so sorry for the littles ones that had to leave so early. My heart goes out to them. They did not ask for this and no one has the right to take anyone's life. It's wrong.

This is a very sad story. I do believe depression can push people over the edge and cause them to behave irrationally and render a person temporarily insane. Taking a life is biblically incorrect. I do not know what to think about situations where people are not in their right minds. I just hope that those who suffer from such conditions reachout for help before they hurt themselves or others. On the otherhand, those who commit similiar offense knowning full well what they are doing should be held accountable. Unfortunately there may be more situations involving rational persons than irrational ones who plea temporary insanity just to get away with their crimes. In any event, it is a tough call to determine the appropriate justice.

when people get to that state, they are no longer functioning rationally and are incapable of seeking help for themselves.

I know that that is not true because I have gone to that point and it is never to late until its too late. As long as you have breath and can move even a hair you can signal a need for help. Giving up on those in trouble can seal the end for them.

The economy is so bad and it could cause people to go crazy cuz they feel they cant take care of their family. And truthfully the kids are tiers and they have the right to do what they feel that is best for tier children. To me I wouldve look at the complete picture and only resorted to that if there is no way out at all.Ending a life is wrong but it depends on the circumstances behind it. They must have felt there was no hope for their family and just got so depressed that they were even thinking straight at all.

Hello Rose... I pity those kids, they deserve to live and have a happy life. In my own opinion poverty should not be a cause to commit such crime. It's inhumane and it's against the will of GOD. Philippines is a third world country and a lot of us here are poor (including our family) but we really strive harder to make a decent living. I think what happened their is a deep depression that had led them in being hopeless. I wish it will never happen again.. Keep safe...!

I think they must have been so desperate and depressed that they just weren't thinking clearly. Obviously I don't think that what they did was right nor do i think they had the right to do this. But I feel sorry for her just the same.

So sad to hear stories like this. I suppose that depression can drive them to feel this way, but why did they feel there was no other alternative? I would be hitting every food bank, food stamps, gov't assistance. It's amazing that in this day and age we have people who don't know where or how to look for help. I couldn't imagine killing my kids no matter how dire the circumstances are. I'd do something, what I don't know but I wouldn't give up.

It had to be more than poverty that caused these parents to consider taking their lives. They were sick, and it's a shame that they didn't try to get help. Taking the lives of the children was horrible. No loving parent would ever consider that.

I would say that the depression of being poor is no exscuse to kill your kids. I have been poor for many years now. I tend to get depressed, but it is no reason to do that. What they do with themselves is their choice. I do not agree with them even killing themselves but thier kids do not have to pay for that. There are resources that they can use to help until they get better situated.

Its evil. How can they even think of dragging their kids into that? They should gave their children up for adoption. Its just so hateful. If they loved their children they would of gave them a chance at life.

Yes. There is a desparationg factor there. I don't think it hits people as much as if there are children involved. I think a parent is littlerally crushed when they can't provide for their family. I've seen it around here. Families struggle. Where their children's best meal is provided by the school because the cost of living is so high the barely make it. I don't think what they did was the answer, but I think it sends a pretty clear picture that people our there are hurting and something needs to be done. The sad think about things like this is when you get so depressed, news like this can turn into a following.
