What is special about India?I had the chance to visit the grave of Mahatma Gandhi, a truly great contribution of India to the world. Mahatma Gandhi, the man who said that if we follow the "eye for an eye" principle of achieving justice, we wouldn't achieve justice. We would all go blind. Gandhi has proven with his life that non-violence is the way to go. He proved his non-violent approach to asserting people's rights during the famous salt march of 1930. When the British clubbed the marchers, the Indians didn't fight but stayed where they were. This approach showed Britain and the world then that by striking defenseless marchers, the British soldiers were viewed as morally bankrupt. Striking defenseless people during the Indian's protest against British control was the height of immorality.Visiting Gandhi's grave was connecting my own belief in non-violence with the spirit of Gandhi. In another chance to visit India, I was in Kolkata and was able to visit the Cultural Center where the plays of Rabindranath Tagore were staged. Tagore, a 1913 Nobel Prize laureate for literature is another gift of India to the world. How can I forget to share the beauty of Taj Mahal, a wonder of the world? What gave me goose bumps though while at Taj Mahal was the story of an Indian activist about Taj Mahal - that after this amazing monument of love was built, the 25,000 slaves who built the structure on orders of Shah Jahan, were all killed so that no one else could copy the grandeur of Taj Mahal. Rabindranath Tagore wrote about the Taj Mahal as ...."a tear drop in the cheek of time". It was only when I heard of the story of the 25,000 slaves that I understood what Tagore meant with his famous poetic line on the Taj Mahal.
