When are we going to hear something new?

Am I wrong, or are we continuing to hear the same rhetoric from now President-Elect Obama that we heard all through his campaign? http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/01/08/obama-warns-dire-consequences-stimulus/ This is basically the same thing he's said in all the press conferences since his election and we're not hearing anything new or any details of what this package would entail or just how it is expected to jump-start the economy. In my opinion, a $1,000 tax cut per couple is not going make much of a dent - probably less than the stimulus checks issued last year did. They're giving out billions of dollars to companies that can't even guarantee the money they get is going to take them past the next couple of months, but the average American isn't going to get (at least in most cases) enough to make a house payment. What's your opinion/input on this?

I listened to Obama's new speech this morning on Fox News and I didn't hear anything new. Personally I think he just may be getting set up to fall on his face by someone that would profit big time by a total crash. The very most what he is talking about could do is just delay a major crash. No matter how many he can put to work at some point these government sponsored jobs have to end. This will put these workers out of jobs again and we will be right back where we started. For one thing it is going to take a lot more than a $T to put 3 million people to work. 1 million people making an average of $8 and hour figures over $15 billion a year. That is just a drop in the bucket compared to what materials will cost to keep them all busy. Grant you what Obama is saying sounds good if you are not really listening. The big wigs that caused this now find themselves in bad need of a fall guy and I think Obama is it. I believe our economy has been hit so hard in the past couple of years nothing is going to stop it from a total crash. If Obama is in office when it happens he takes the blame. No I didn't hear anything new and I don't believe we are going to either. Art

I believe that Obama was put up to run by the DNC because they knew he could win - he talks a good talk - he is there to do their bidding. As his statement to Clinton when the mortgage crisis thing came up - something to the effect of "tell me what to do and I'll sell it".

Newton, I think you are right on the money. Obama was put in office either by big money people outside our government as their rubber stamp or he we put in as a fall guy to take the blame for the mess Bush made. Art

In essence he is keeping his fingers crossed that with issuing money in some sort of fashion through alternative means it looks like he is doing something new (providing the believe of 'hope' that it'll work) and that it either somehow miraculously works or sustains itself long enough until real economic recovery sets in or at the very least until he has one the re-election. The stimulus checks didn't work, the tax credit will do even less. It's less money, it's not a permanent tax reduction (but people will see tax reduction over a long period of time as in like $10 to $20 per pay check, and they'll think it is), and it will not reach people in a timely manner. It's $500 per person who earns a paycheck. Yes, for spouses, if both work, it's $1,000. But if not, or for the self-employed, the tax reduction won't take effect until tax time. That would be sometime next year. It's all a bridge he hopes doesn't crash too early, because once he is in office blaming Bush will only go so far before people will point the finger at him. I don't envy him. He made promises he very well knew latest by late summer he couldn't fulfill. We are in a slump and there is no miracle cure that'll overnight drag us out of there. But to pretend there is one and without his measures we won't get out... well, that's an entire hornets nest he is getting ready to sit in.

I find it interesting that while everyone has always said it was the Republicans that promoted trickle-down economics, that it is primarily the Democrats that are handing out the money to big business instead of putting it with the average American where it can do some good.

Yes, you are absolutely right. But the democrats in Washington are the same way in the pockets of big business as the republicans. That's also while lobbyists will always have a job. Giving the money into the hands of the people would be trickle up effect and just would take too long for the big shot business people. They are of the reward me now generation;)

my opinion is he hasn't even gotten into office yet geez give him a break. He has to get in office then sit down and iron out the details with his staff before he can tell the people what that plan is.

But his continuing message to the American people is that we need to get his stimulus plan passed and in effect ASAP - if that is the case, there needs to be a plan, and we need to know what it is. Thus far, all we have heard is general ideas with no indication of how they would be implemented or how they are expected to help the economy.

Actually, he wants that pushed through before he even takes his oath so he can 'hit the ground running'. He again stressed it today that the package needs to be pushed through now or we will have big time problems. Unlike his predecessors when in waiting stage, Obama has very much uttered his opinion and expressed what is necessary now in regard to the economy. He has issued statements and explained his plans in speeches and interviews. The package according to all of that is ready to go and just needs passing by the legislature, ASAP. There are no more details to be ironed out, if he wants it now. He only diplomatically stays quiet on the Gaza issue. So sorry, he is already doing presidential stuff albeit he is not in office yet, so no, no break for him. He is right, we don't have the luxury to simply sit back and wait, if he wants things done now, we also have the right to closely examine and critique what exactly the package entails and what his plans are. It would be foolish to just blindly trust the man.
