Okay, so my fiancee's birthday is this Sunday. I am FLAT broke, but want to do something nice for him. I work at a natural foods store--similar to Whole Foods--and am able to charge purchases to be paid for out of my next paycheck. I am a vegetarian who sometimes eats fish...but he is a meat eater. I would like to make him a delicious MEAT-based meal. I have absolutely no idea what to make for him. A side note: he is a cook by trade. I know he is going to try and come into the kitchen to help, but I really want to just have an evening where I do all the cooking and pamper him. Thusly, the meal will have to be sort of simple to execute. I guess what I'm asking for is any ideas of a reasonably easy but delicious meat dish to make. I want it to be fancy. If it were your birthday and you could eat ANY meal you wanted, what would you choose? Don't forget sides, I need all the help I can get. THANK YOU!!!!!!

If he is a bonafide Meat & Potatoes guy (my guy is) then he would LOVE a Prime Rib dinner. Here's one site on how to prepare it: http://www.iabeef.org/Content/perfectprimerib.aspx Serve with a baked potato (or your guy's favorite type of potato), a veggie and/or salad. If the prime rib is a bit out of your budget than I would suggest buying a nice cut of Angus steak. T-Bone, Porterhouse, Rib-eye, and New York Strip are usually the best (and most expensive). However, if your budget is tight you can also opt for an Angus Grill Steak, Top Sirloin, Tip Steak, Flank Steak or even Round Steak. (Eye of Round is very good and almost looks like Filet Mignon - oh...Filet Mignon is also another suggestion of a fancier steak - often cooked with a slice of bacon wrapped around it). Grilled steak is best, but if you don't have one or can't grill - broil it. Flip it often and cooked slowly is best. Ask your guy how he likes his steak done. Or if you prefer not to reveal details of his special dinner - cook it until it is a light pink in the middle (Medium). Prior to cooking rub with spices like salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, rosemary and/or basil. Or marinate (you can search marinades and find one that sounds tasty). Good luck and reply if you need more details

Thank you so much for your ideas! That sounds like a great idea. I'm going to have a look tomorrow and see what the meat department holds, but I know that he likes prime rib. I'll definitely keep that in mind, and thanks for the tips on cooking meat. I am not able to grill, so I will have to broil. Is the best way to check if a steak is done by cutting into it to see the color?

I poke the meat with a fork (if juices still run deep red it's still pretty raw), or I cut it. Keep in mind that the meat will continue to cook slightly after you remove it from the heat source. You can also use a meat thermometer. If you do a search, I'm sure you can find out what temperature is ideal. Good luck!

Most men seem to like steak. Meatloaf also is a delicious meal. You could do mac and cheese and some kind of greens for a side for meatloaf. Steak is always good with baked potato and a salad of some sort. I would feel him out and see what kind of meat dishes he really prefers. There are so many to choose from.

There are so many options. Steak is a good idea...I think he'd definitely like red meat. :) Thanks for the ideas!
