No, I'm not. How many films are in the franchise as it is...ten? And now we want to start over again? Thanks, but no thanks. It's this kind of crap that keeps the genre stagnant--for some reason, it seems like the horror genre is remade more than any other. It's as if the only reason for the remakes is to make the genre we love more palatable for a mainstream audience, which is insulting in its own right. No, I am perfectly happy with the originals I love, and the original horror content they have coming out, as sparse as it is in the face of remakes. I say stop the remakes so we can have a vibrant genre.

I totally agree. Sometimes there are fresh, creative, inspired ways to craft a remake, but that is very, very rarely what we actually see happening, and it's certainly not why studios fund them. Movies are so often completely intertwined with the time and place they were made--there is something quintessentially 80s to me about Friday the 13th, and its sister slasher franchises (Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.). Would you remake The Beatles "Revolver" album, only without all the psychedelic effects?

your right it does seem like horror movies get remade more often than anything else.. i guess they figure we will watch killing no matter how many times its been done

I think studios tend to remake horror films most because they perceive them as being the easiest as far as formula goes. They seem to equate the content (violence, blood, gore, etc) with simplicity, so they throw some crap together and they are confident that fans will go to see them because we like it (unfortunately, fans see them not really because they like them, but because it's all they're given to watch). I think this is why so many remakes fall flat. The horror formula (or formulas), really, if the filmmaker has any skill at all, can be very complicated. I think most of us who have grown up watching these movies can attest to the fact that they scared us a lot more as kids, and as we got older, we became harder to scare. It's because we grew out of so many "simple" horror scares/formulas. In order to actually scare an adult horror film-goer, the filmmaker would have to really think to put something together. This is where originality comes in, and this is why it's just better to greenlight an original script and bypass your so-called "built-in" audience with remakes, and actually give horror fans what they want, which is not some rehashed schlock from their childhoods which utilize the same formulas, but something new and...*gasp!*...scary.

I'm so sick of the remakes! Can't they leave them alone and make originals? I'm ticked that they are redoing the first movie. The original killer was his mother, NOT Jason. I can't believe that they are leaving that out or I should say changing it. Plus, the director is having Jason move faster than before and they want to delve into the psyche of Jason. What? That's what ticked me off about the new Halloween. Don't get me wrong it was an ok movie and I like Rob Zombie, but he change or made up too much of the story. Said Michael Myers came from a broken home....umm no. In the original he had his parents and a normal childhood. That kind of made it even more frightening. The fact that a kid who had a NORMAL and nice background could be this psychotic and evil killer. The new directors today don't get the stories. Sorry to be ranting. But this really really gets me angry.

I'd rather them stop making the movies than changing the mythology. Don't screw up the mythology just to update it for a new generation. All they are doing is making a new movie and ticking off horror fans. If you haven't noticed, most of the remakes are crap. Yes there are a few that were ok but most are crap. That should be a clue that directors should be making new horror not remaking old.

The friday the 13th remake is actually drawing elements from part 1,2 & 3. It's taking place at the time of Part 2 though.. (ie- mom WAS a killer). Would you really want a sequel at this point? Jason just crash landed on Earth 2 and is half robot. He is about 60-something years old (not including the deep freeze). If you included elements from part 9, he's basically invulnerable now because the only thing that can kill him was a magical dagger wielded by a blood relative... etc. By letting them start over, with what they're calling a "non supernatural" approach, and having Jason being born in 1980, means that he can be current to the teenagers of this generation, which is what the Friday the 13th films have ALWAYS been geared for. It also means that as sequels occur, they can do it right this time and avoid all the continuity flaws they had previously. They're making him scary again.. The old F13 movies just simply aren't scary at all. By the time part 6 came around, it was a barrel of laughs to watch Jason do his thing. As for Jason not running... Are you familiar with the fact that they hired Richard Brooker to play Jason for part 3, BECAUSE he's an ex-trapeeze artist? In part 2, he ran ever more than that. I think people only remember zombie jason and forget that this guy used to jump through windows and run after people. When Jason was alive, he was very active. As for things like the machete sharpening, etc.. I think that's a pretty neat addition, personally. He's more of a real person, rather than an unwritten character with no depth at all. If you've read "Crystal Lake Memories" you know that up until part 4, they really didn't give a damn about making him a genuine character at all.. he was simply "the killer". Anyways.. better to start over than to add to the mess with another gag reel. THe old films will still be there when you want them.. this doesn't take away from that.. it merely adds a new perspective to it.. think of it as a "what if" proposition. I can't wait to see the modern Jason within a theater full of screaming teens. If you don't want to participate, then don't.. go scare yourself silly watching Jason revert into a little boy in toxic waste on your home tv. You can watch new "not Jason" films anytime you want to. Personally, I like Jason, and like the chance to get him back on the big screen.

I have not seen the new Friday the 13th. I'm surprised I never went to go see it, I own every single Friday the 13th movie..... Even Freddy Vs. Jason. But like some people mentioned the remakes aren't always very good. So that's why I've just been waiting till it gets really cheap on dvd before I even buy it, lol. Sounds like it's better to wait to watch it.

That's just more proof that the writers have gotten lazy & can't come up with original ideas. It's hardly necessary to remake.

Exactly! No originality. Need new directors/writers then.

When I was a kid, Friday the 13th was always one of my favorites as my mom use to rent the movies for my best friend and I. We would rent a betamax machine (remember those?) haha We use to cuddle and get freaked out when Jason would jump through the windows lol. I'm very happy to see that they have come out with a remake even though I think the movie should have been left alone. Who knows... they may put an interesting twist into it. Thanks for the info and have a great night
