Lovely day in Iowa with snow falling and I was told yesterday that my gas furnace by Coleman has a crack in the combustion chamber and it has been red tagged and shut off. It is a forced air gas furnace. It ran fan until about two days ago when it wouldn't stay running but just kept kicking on and off and then finally staying on. I called in a repair man and he first said that my fan switch was bad and needed replaced, then he suddenly says he found a crack and that the furnace has to be completely replaced. He said that his company could sell us a furnace for $2000 but we dont have it. I cant get a loan as we have a poor credit rating and live in an older mobile home. We went out last night and bought space heaters to get us by for now. I turned the furnace back on myself after he left and ran it long enough to warm the house up until we got the electric space heaters. I can't help but wonder is there really a crack or is he just trying to sell us a new furnace? I am thinking of getting a second opinion. I still had to pay to have him come out to check the furnace out so it will be next week before I can afford that.
