I have tried a few distros on my search for a favourite, and have ended up with Mandriva 2009, the special Xfce community edition, which I upgraded from the 2008 version without any problems. Ubuntu is meant to be good, but it just didn't seem to flow for me, and PClos was also okay, but its basically a slightly tweaked version of Mandriva. Linux Mint is meant to be good for beginners, based on Unbuntu but with all the Codecs in place, although I haven't tried it myself. Puppy Linux is good if you are planning to run linux on an older system, i have had a P233 laptop running quite nicely with Puppy Linux. Best bet is to download a few distos and try them out, and also at the same time also check out the forum of each distro, although I have always found them really helpful with advice, and then just pick one that you feel more at home with. Best of Luck.
