Whats the best way to get referrals?

From what I understand, if you advertise your referral link on different sites, along with inviting your friends/family here, that should give you pretty good chances of getting a lot of referrals. Well, I had emailed everyone on my friend list and also have been advertising on different sites but only was able to get 1 little referral and they arent even active. I even added them to my friend list and still no response. What am I doing wrong or what am I missing? I dont have my own website and have no idea how to make one. Can anyone offer suggestions or help? Thanks.

Have you though about building a mailing list? The successful internet markets are saying "without one, you're leaving cash on the table." They have one and they are making a lot of money online.
With every subscriber on your mailing list, build relationships so they will know you're trustworthy and do not only spam them about different paying website. Also give them information that can benefit them.

A mailing list is a list of people who agreed to give you their email addresses in return for you to send them information about something you know such as making money online, getting referrals, or whatever. These are people that you will need to show you can be trusted and that is why you do not send them only spam (if you don't like receiving spam, they won't either) or things that will only benefit you. To handle the list of email addresses and sending emails to your subscribers, there are programs like Aweber, or the free RapidResponseBot.
WorkFor3Dollars is one but it is also a matrix.

In my experience the best way to get referrals is to either have your own website or blog as then you have a much larger market for getting referrals than if you just rely on your friends and family. Plus if you work on the generous ratio that just 1 in 10 referral will actually make you any money then the only way to really make it work is to attract as many people to your site so that they can join up.
Blogging would probably be easiest as you no longer need any real technical knowledge or money to start with and you can build up a good amount of content over time. If you go the website route you really need a good amount of content to start with.

Apart from all the methods that you have discussed here, there is a more way to get referrals. and that is a website that gives you referrals for any site or programm. I am a member there and I have got a few referrals for my sites.

Getting referrals takes time & even if you get lots of referrals people go inactive soon.
You do well to realize that referral is not a one time process & an ongoing process.
Easiest form of website is a blog, but starting a blog just to get referrals for mylot may not be worth all the efffort, the same result can be achieved with a mailing list as someone has already suggested.
I have three out of the box ideas.
1) Join another social network/forum and recommend mylot to them & recommend other forum to your mylot friends.
2) When you get a first payout from mylot, send a PM to all your referrals, some of them will get active again.
3) Include your url of mylot profile page as a signature for every email that you will ever send .

posting your link on another site is not a bad idea but prefferable if you get the email address of people you know and they know you so that when you send them invitations and they see your name,they will probably call you to make enquiry about the site and with that you can make them register and be active as well..try that..it works for me

Well I did that, emailing everyone on my friend list which includes my family and I even explained in detail what my email was about, but I didnt get any takers. My brother accepted my offer but then said he prefers another site (dunno what that is) so that was that. Thanks anyway.

how about traffic exchange ?
I have joined two traffic exchange ( can I mention it here? )
and seems like I have response from them although it's not rapidly but I think it's working.
