Are you an objective reader/viewer of news and information?

Occasionally I find discussions that state a strong opinion or attitude based on an article that the person has read, but when I read the article I don't always get the same impression. Usually elements of the article that the person discusses are isolated while other elements of the article are ignored or maybe not even consciously registered. Often I point out there are further, sometimes opposing views also stated in the article or elsewhere. Often such critical observations are disregarded or ridiculed. To gain my respect and potential agreement on a single perspective, I have to be reassured that a person arguing one point of view understands its strengths and weaknesses as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing view. In other words, they must prove they have assessed the issue objectively before making a subjective judgement. Do you take the time to understand the opposing perspective? How do you overcome your own prejudices or those of the news source? Do you appreciate opposing view points or do you prefer to have people simply agree with you? I'll be interested to hear!
