Laptop Car charger dammaged my Laptop

Hi. During the christmas holidays me and my family went to a resort and on the way my son plugged in the car charger that the company who sold our laptop to us said would work perfectly on our laptop. Anyway the charger caused a spark and then all the chargers we connected to the laptop would not work and the light on the charger would just keep flashing. So now our laptop has been sent back to the distributers and we have to pay for the repairs... I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and how i could avoid something like this happening again.
