I am not saying that I am the smartest person in the world (far from that ) but ever thought of a really great discussion and decided to search for it and get the shock of your life ,because someone or many persons have thought of it before....Shucks !!!!.What would even make it feel worse is that they used the same title and approached it from basically the same perspective you were thinking. What do you do in this case just totally abort or do you try to approach it from a totally new point of view ? .This new point of view might not necessarily be the most exciting but thats the best you can do.

Hi ronnyb! Well it does happen to most of us and in my case just a few times because, I rarely start my own discussions. haha.. But I do agree with you that there are times that when I have an idea (thinking a great topic) and then will find out that there is already an existing topic like the one I just thought moments ago. If that happens, I will abort it and would just forget it. however, there are those times that I wouldn't search mylot if there will be a similar topic with mine because I am just too eager to post it. haha... Take care and have a nice day! lovelots..faith210

It is the art of putting your own stamp on the opinion and see it from another point of view .Try to put a different prospective on it if you see what I mean. You could always pick on an aspect of the discussion that no one else has thought of.Or if you run out of ideas answer a few discussions till your brain clears and you start thinking again.

Yes and a art you have to be good at because there are just times when it seems everything you think of ,someone elas has thought of it too .Thank you for your answer

i never actually do a search before i start a discussion to find out whether somebody else had started it before or not... that is the bad me... anyway, i hardly start a discussion here as well... i prefer to respond more rather than starting a discussion... but i know how it must feel to have somebody else already start a discussion that you want to write... that must be really frustruating... take care and have a nice day...

I know that I am wrong but I never check to see if the same or almost the same discussion has already been posted. My reason for not bothering to do this is that perhaps it had been post many months before or that there could be others such as myself who only respond to my friends discussions through email notifications. Perhaps my group of friends have not seen that particular discussion. Also if it is breaking news then perhaps I am putting a different point of view on it or asking for comments on a different aspect of the topic. I am also lazy and do not have the time or inclination to search because the similar discussion could have different tags on it and tags are what is used by the system in searching for like or similar discussions.

Well, I remember ages ago when I started this discussion, after I actually started it I searched it and realized about 5-7 people already started it. I guess it really doens't matter that I started it, I would just add to the number! :)

I guess I wouldn't start the discussion and I would just post a response to theirs. I'm really finding it hard to begin discussions of interest to others and ones that haven't already been posted.

This only indicates that at subconscious level all human beings are similar. In such cases it is better to find out a new point of view , that is what I do if such a common discussion comes up. Naturally if a problem or situation is faced by one it can be faced by others also so the similarity in discussions.

That sometimes happened that there's some people have same thoughts and ideas but they only differ on how they constructed and how they percieved it. It's maybe because they experienced same thing or they read same story or they came from same culture and sometimes some ideas are universal. Happy posting and myloting rain

A lot would depend on how old the discussion was. If it was fairly recent then I would just leave a comment on the discussion . But if it had been done a year or more ago and didn't have any current activity then I would come up with a better title and a new approach and move forward with it.

Sometimes, it happens tht two people manage to think of the same thing. This is the power of the mind. The mind plays beautifully like this, that the topic thought of by one person can also be thought of by some other person. In fact, this is quite a surprisin gthing and miraculous.

Well I think that in a situation like that there isn't much that you can do aside from trying to think of a different direction to take the discussion. I have had that happen to me and most times I just respond to the discussion and move on to the next subject. Don't let it bother you too much, it's happened to the best of us at one time or another.

It's difficult to come across a topic that no one else has explored before, but you just have to live with it. There's lots of people in this world, and you have to agree that the chances of another person thinking of the same topic as you would be much higher. Especially here where there are lots of discussions being made every day, and according to the counter at the bottom of the page, the current myLot population as of this post is 158,506 users. That's quite a lot of people. Plus our minds are all pretty much built the same way, so go figures that there must be someone out there who had the same brainwave as you at some point in time.

You know what they say about great minds! Use a slightly different title, put it in your own words, try to approach it from a different angle and use different key words. What I really hate is searching for a subject, coming up blank, starting the discussion then finding 7 or 8 similar discussions come up after I've started mine, that didn't come up in the search!
