I was wondering if anyone had little ones with tubes in their ears... My daughter had tubes put in last July and she is still having a terrible time with her ears. They periodically drain this weird white stuff and hurt her. The docs say it's part of the process and I do believe them but I'm wondering how you guys handle it. How long does it last? How long will it take before the tubes are no longer needed? Any input will be greatly appreciated!

My son has tubes. He had them put in at 7 months old. He is about 24 months and still has them. They don't cause any problems that i have noticed. The doctor says they will fall out on their own. He had to get them because of reoccuring ear infections. Now he rarely gets ear infections but often has sinus infections. The doctor says its because he may need his adnoids out in the next couple of years.

Yea mine had her tonsils and adnoids out when she had the tubes put in. She had sleep apnea, central and local so she had to have them done anyway. She's just still miserable. I'm not sure what to do. Looks like yet another trip to the doc this week!

My daughter had tubes put in when she was 3. I also had tubes put in, but I was 15 and 17 when I did. For me the tubes come out on their own about a year later. For my daughter, one came out about 9 months later, and the other was about a year and a half but it didn't come out all the way but sit there in the canal and the doctor took the tweezers and picked it out.
As for the draining. for the first few weeks we had that happen. But then it tapered off. The doctor said that whenever we went outside we should have cotton in our ears for protection. Also when in the bath or pool to wear ear plugs to make sure no water gets in, even if you use just a shower.
I am not a doctor at all but I know other people who also have had their children have plugs and I haven't heard about this much drainage so long after having them put in. I wonder if there is a reason that there is so much fluid.
Good luck and take care?

Man I really hope we don't have this problem for another 15 years! I was hoping it would go away this year. I have taken her and called several times about the drainage and they say it is totally normal. Her ped. ent is the best in the state. His dad is the first to ever do ear tubes. I really hope he knows what he is talking about! Her surgery was horrible so I don't want her to have to go through that again. I just feel bad for her ya know? She is so little and has had so many problems, I would lay down in front of a bus to take it all away for her. It is emotionally draining to see your baby in pain so often in her short little life. Thank you for your response! It's nice to have people to talk to about it!

Well, our pediatric ent said they would probably fall out after a year or so and that she may not need them redone after that but the way it has been going, I don't look for that to stand. She gets alot of drainage and pain. The drainage is common but still not great. At least not the kind she has. She also gets swimmers ear from the drainage. She has to have ear drops when it drains which she hates and cries about. She has to wear ear plugs in the bath cause any water in her ear just irritates it, but after her ear being dry for a while, she gets a hard wax build up which is very painful. I'm supposed to do a vinigar flush but it is extremely painful for her as they are very sensitive. It is just one never ending nightmare after another. I just need some reassurance that this isn't a lifelong problem and that she will be ok. Her hearing has improved drastically since having them put in but her articulation depends largely on weather or not she has drainage and irritation so it varies practially daily. It sucks!

No none of my children have them, but I had some plastic tubes surgically implanted in my ears when I was a young child. I have had them all my life. Everyone once in a while they get filled and I have to go to the doctor and them professionally cleaned out by them. I am also prone to ear infections. I do think my tubes are different from the ones they have today. So I am sorry I don't know how long she will have to have them.
