My son and his wife are having a baby in March, this will be our fifth grandbaby! It's a girl! I am a very frugal person and am in search for all and any ideas to cut back on the cost of the baby shower, including the cake, favors, decorations. I have read quite a bit on the internet trying to get more ideas on this. I wanted to ask you, my MyLotter friends, for your advice. I am thinking it will just be a tea with no games but that could change. Thanks for you input and ideas and God bless you!

I love baby showers! Okay, here are my thoughts: (1) The cake: you can pick up classic white cake mixes for $1.00 (or slightly more), a small package of jello for $.50 and a container of cool whip for around $1.50 - make a jello poke cake. It's delicious! I made one last night to serve for my birthday today. (2) The food: ask everyone to bring a snack or an entree, and then keep track of who is bringing what. (3) The papergoods: everything you need is at a dollar store, if you have one around where you live. (4) The decorations: ask the kids in your family to make them out of cardboard, construction paper, paper plates, and whatever else the happen to have. Then, on the day of the shower, ask them to decorate. Pick up some balloons from the dollar store, too. I hope this helps!

You can get lots of things by just going to the dollar stores and some places like Card Factory Outlet.

Have you ever noticed when you've gone to a shower where loads of cash has been spent that you don't seem to have as much fun as if you had gone to one that is homespun? Expensive is not always best. You might want to set a budget and stick to it. Invite only as many people as will fit inside your budget and you have enough room for. One of the biggest ways to cut costs for a shower is to have it in your home rather than rent out a public place. Make the food yourself and keep it simple. Depending on what time of day you plan on having your shower you can bet most people have just eaten a meal. Menu Suggestions Egg Salad, Tuna, Ham Salad sandwiches (can also grind up bologna and mix it with a little bit of pickle and mayo) Chips Jello or Jello Salad Sloppy Joes Macaroni or Potato Salad Cake - Make the cake yourself Prize Suggestions Hit up your local dollar store and buy inexpensive. They always have stuff like candles, bath accessories, lotions etc. Party favors can be made with tissues and those small pink or blue safety pins you can find at a craft store, walmart, or sometimes even a dollar store. Fold the tissue in half. Fold it in half again. Now fold it into a triangle shape. Lay it on a table so the long side of the triangle is on top. Bring the triangle tip on the bottom up. Place a dab of hot glue on the tissue so when you bring one side over you can press it into the glue. Place another dab of hot glue on the tissue and bring the other side over. Hot glue a pink or blue safety pin in the middle for a decoration. If you can't find pink or blue safety pins small metal safety pins work also. Fill with nuts, mints, or a mixture of nuts and mints. Here are some game ideas you could use. Guess Mom's Tummy Size (Materials- String or yarn and scissors)Have each guest pull the yarn to the size they believe would fit perfectly around the Mother-To-Be's center of her pregnant tummy. After everyone cuts their string, compare the results to the Mommy-To-Be's actual tummy. Give a prize to the guest who is the closest. Never say "Baby" (Materials- baby safety pins or another type of baby object you can place on a string for each guest at the party as well as string or yarn, enough for each woman to wear as a necklace). Have each guest place the necklace with the baby safety pins around her neck when they get to the party. The rules for this baby shower game are given out at the beginning of the baby shower that whenever someone says the word "baby" during the shower, any guest who calls it out gets a pin from the other guest who stated the word. At the end of the baby shower, the woman with the most pins wins a prize. How Many Baby Items Can You Name (Materials- pad of paper and pen for each guest). Have each guest write down as many baby products as they can name (bottle, blanket, pacifier, etc) within 5 minutes. Sure it is easy at the beginning, but towards the last few minutes, the guests will start racking their brains for more. Give a prize to the guest who has the most items written down. Guess The Gerber's (Materials - Gerber's infant food, pads of paper and pens). Take the labels off or tape white paper over the labels of the baby food jars and have the guests at the baby shower guess the food (carrots, peas, sweet potato). Most fun to play up to 10 jars of different kinds of foods. If there is a tie give each guest a prize. Guess How Many (Materials- Cotton Balls or Q-tips). Pass around the jars full of cotton balls and Q-tips. The one who guesses the closest wins a prize. Guess How Many Diapers Fill a clear plastic container (about 50 qt size with disposable diapers)newborn size. Have the guests guess how many diapers are in the container. Of course, container and contents go to mom since , as we all know, you can never have enough diapers. The one who guesses the closest wins a prize. Pass the Dirty Diaper (Materials- diaper, chocolate (or brown marker), music player). One of our "dirtiest" baby shower games is for the host to take a diaper that has been "fixed" with warm chocolate in the right place and have the guest pass it to the guest next to them (make sure everyone is in a circle). When the host stops the music, whomever is holding the diaper is out of the game. Last person gets the prize. Blindfold Diapering (Materials- blindfold, baby lifesize doll(s), diapers). One of the funniest baby shower games is for the guests break into teams (up to five persons per team). Each team has a doll, blindfold and diapers. The object is for each participant to place the blindfold on, take the current diaper off the doll and place the new one on while blindfolded. After the first person finshes diapering, they run to the next team-mate who places the blindfold on and has to do the same. The first team to finish diapering wins!
