you run it under hot water right. well there is a guy at work who thinks he's so smart and he's the only one who knows this. we were trying to open a jar and he walks by, stopps and say you know if you put that under water it's the science of so and so, that will expand. and he's trying to use the smartest technical words. we just looked at him and were like ok, does he really think people don't know this

HaHa, that's funny. Sometimes the water trick doesn't work either or else I'm just losing all my muscles. I've tapped the top a few times with a butter knife and finally it'll come lose, but oh, it's terrible when you can't get the darn lid off. You should have played along with him and said "Really?, I didn't know that, how interesting, you're so smart.", lol! Yeh, that old trick has been around for quite a long time.

i'd usually do the same thing, too.. just tap the 'tight' lid a few times.. it usually works..

Two other things that are worth knowing if the lid is tight: Insert a knife blade or end of a spoon between the edge of the lid and the glass and lever gently. Once the vaccuum is released, it's far easier to unscrew the lid. Use your left hand to unscrew the lid. Because you are turning the lid to the left, the turning action actually tightens your grip on the lid. Using the right hand actually gives you less grip, even though the right hand is normally stronger.

Your first suggestion always works! Once vacuum is released, it's easy to open a jar. Just be careful and don't spill the jam/jelly/pickles out of the jar while it's up side down.

I work in a kitchen and I normally open tight lids simply by grasping the jar and tapping the lid on the table, this create a bubble of air that make the opening very easy indeed. One good tap is normally enough. Try it. Alex
