working in call centers

working in calls centers may look easy. you know, just sitting down, taking calls, or making the calls.
my husband works in an international call center based in our city. he often tells me his horrific calls that drains his energy when he gets home.
you see my husband works as technical support. and as is his personality, my husband would do everything that he can to help people, callers or otherwise. it is his nature. sometimes, he takes it too personally that he cannot be of help, sometimes because of the limited resources that he has.
one of the things that he gets graded for is the longevity of the handling time of a particular client. sometimes, he goes overboard in his desire to help people.
but one thing i don't like is irate callers. i can understand if they received bad service and could not find anyone to blame, so more often than not, it is the technical support people who get the brunt of the ire. but what i don't understand are the racists.
when a tech support personnel takes a call, the caller would ask where the tech is from. if they come from a different country other than the callers, they would say racist remarks and slam the phone.
i think that is very rude. those who work in the call center earn about $200 per month, way way low that what companies should be paying if their agents are based in their own country. that is why they are outsourcing because of the low pay. but in our country, 200$ is not big, but already quite reasonable. that is why my husband is working there.
so the least that callers from western countries do is to give the agents some respect. if the service is bad, fine. but i hope they don't berate people just because they come from asia. the fact that they are working as technical support means they know the technicalities of the problem and the customer who is calling does not. and it doesn't mean that because they are from asia, they are less intelligent than those in the first world. i doubt it very much.
the issue here is not about intelligence. the issue here is respect. so if you do make calls to agents for your cable or telephone service, think that the other person on the other line is a PERSON, too. not some automated robot who takes in your calls.

I also work in a call center here in Ortigas for an American company. I myself encounter people who are rude. I find this people very unprofessional and not disciplined. I tried working in an Australian company and geezz some of them are way totally rude than Americans. They even imitate you on the phone and they annoy you by scratching on the phone that would break your eardrums..Then they badmouth you so bad your nose is bleeding from it..so I told my boss I'm sorry I cannot work in a place where almost all the people I call are very very rude and have no good words they can say..urgh
that was the most horrible job ever... I resigned because it broke my heart for they have no respect for others. I am not saying this in general though just for some people.

I have worked a lot of jobs in my life and one of the worst was a call center. And not to mention it was the shortest time I ever worked a job.
I think I lasted about 2 months and that was only because I needed the money from the job. As soon as I got a chance I was outta there! LOL

I understand why your husband would be upset when it comes to having people give him such remarks. Some people can be downright rude.

i used to work in a call here in our province and i can relate with what your husband feels. that is true some people might think that working in a call center is an easy thing and that you don't have to exert too much effort for you will have to sit down the entire shift and talk with a customer but this agents are having a hard time during while on the call. you have to deal with rude people that would shout at you if they can't get what they want. You may not be having physical labor but emotionally you are being maligned by these rude customers. that you carry this when you get out of work and you tend to be stressed out a lot. hope your husband won't feel bad about those customers he will just get used to the kind of work and the people he serves to. happy mylotting!!!

I am considering doing some customer service jobs to earn extra money. I hear of these things all the time. I don't know why people lash out at the ones on the phone. I hope i never deal with that.

It's really hard to work on a call center. Yes you'll only receive calls and answer it, then you'll be compensated well twice a month, but the trauma is heavy. Mostly if you encounter some irrate an uncorteous callers. Plus here, call center agents starts to work at night or they are on a graveyard shift. Will only mean that they sleep in the morning and most of us know that it's hard to sleep when the sun rises and it's not healthy. So your mental and health is at risk if you gonna work on a call center company. Think twice.. The only benefit is the high compensation..

I understand your situation there I have several friends and relatives who work there as well and they can give a hundred of stories like that. I think the reason why they also hate it is because they want their call centers in their country for reason of employment but since they have a higher rate they chose places like ours where cost of labor is cheap. Well I hope your husband can cope with it as I can see in my friends who work in there that these kinds of things doesn't bother them at all anymore and got used to it already as they know that there are people out there that are like that and that is part of the job. I hope your husband is also able to cope with it and just be aware that it really happens in that kind of work.

Hi spoiled,
I heard a lot of stories from friends who are working in a call center and makes me scared to apply there! LOL! I know it needs to be tough and courageous and I admire for those who were working there for a long period of time!
It is very sad to note, but, wherever we go, there are really people who are like that! Who can't be nice to others!

i definitely feel for you as i have been a call center agent once, for about a month only.lolz.i wasn't able to continue working there because i had to put my review for the board exams as my top priority.i only tried to apply to see what this call center thing is all about since people are talking about it as the "it" job nowadays.
well,i have been shouted at also and i have been told rueful remarks from callers once they learned that i'm not american.i treid to be polite to them but they react as if they are superior or something.that is quite degrading on my part i think.but oh well, people are people.we just need to humble ourselves.lolz.
i'm not going back to that kind of work again.
anywayz,happy mylotting!
