Receiving a "gift" of a bad check

For the second time now, I've been placed in the awkward situation of depositing a check from an in-law and the check bounced. This time, the check was a Christmas gift! I find this really difficult to deal with because I manage my finances very, very carefully and I would certainly never write a check that I couldn't cover. It's bad enough to get an insufficient funds check from someone you DON'T know... but when it comes from family and it's supposed to be a GIFT? At first, I was angry and wanted to say just don't bother writing me checks ever again... but that was just me being embarrassed at the whole situation. Instead, I called the bank to confirm that I wouldn't be charged any extra fees for depositing the bad check into my account. I would like to tell the person just don't send gifts anymore - I don't expect it anyway - but I'm afraid that, no matter what I say, it'll be the wrong thing or offend. How would you handle it?

Definitely a great suggestion, j47 lee, and thanks :) Do you think there is a polite and appropriate way to suggest that? I don't want to seem ungrateful. The situation is just frustrating because another in-law asked me to cash a check for her (said her paycheck was going to be deposited overnight) and that check bounced too. She never gave me back my any of my money (close to 1K), even when I told her she could pay it back a bit at a time if it helped (I suggested even $20 per paycheck or something) and she just stopped talking to me instead. I try to be helpful and considerate because these people are supposed to be my "family" now... but it stings to feel the results of the carelessness with money.
