Part of a photograph colored, other black and white

Coloured and Black&White - Photo from Facebook (this is not me, yet a friend of mine!), I wonder how you can do the effect?

Hi everyone! I saw a pretty cool photograph on Facebook (see attached): a part of the picture (the ball) has still got its original colour, while everything else is B&W. It really gives a nice result, adds an extra to the pic, so I'd like to know how to do this in Photoshop myself. Anyone who knows?

I love pictures like this also and its so easy to do, not only in photoshop but different photo editing software also. And there is also more than one way to do it. Glad you learned how to do it, it will be an obsession now that you know how to do it you will be doing everything that way. lol

That is indeed a nice tutorial; as with all editing, there are many ways to achieve an end. Another simple approach is to duplicate the image, and use any method you like to alter the top layer to monochrome; then select and erase the parts you want coloured so that the original shows through from below.
