The date 21 December 2012 is the date on which (depending on one's interpretation) The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Monument 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed. (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012) From what I have read, the Mayans never considered it to be the 'end of the world'. If anything, it would be the start of a new cycle or a 'new age'. I don't think we need to be any more concerned about the world ending on that date than we should be concerned that any one of us may die tomorrow. What, after all, can any of us do if the world were to end on that date?
