ColdFX and echinacea--Do they work?

People keep telling me to take coldFX or echinacea just prior to getting sick. They say that it helps prevent colds or to make colds not as bad. Do these products really work? Have you tried it? what is your experience with them? I've seen coldFX at the stores, but it is really expensive. Do you have any tips on preventing colds?
