What measures have you found work the best in disciplining your children? Do you ever use corporal punishment?

We never used corporal punishment. I think hitting a child is not only disrespectful, but it sends a message to the child that hitting is a way to solve problems. From the time that they were very small, we talked to our kids and explained what we expected from them. Non-compliance resulted in consequences, depending on their age, maturity, and the severity of the offense. Typical disciplinary measures included groundings and/or taking away favored possessions/activities.

Your practices are similar to the way we handled our girls, though I still believe that Proverbs is appropriate in some circumstances, that is judicious use of the rod.

Good question. I have tried a variety of disciplinary techniques over the years with my child. Not all of them were successful. Some just made her mad, but didn't change the root of the behavior. Removing personal choice is probably the one that has had the most affect on her.

It seems to us that making the youngster recognize that tere are consequences to his or her behavior are the ones that work best, whether it be loss of choice, freedom or such work best.
