The Changes Begin........

Regina, Saskatchewan
January 20, 2009 11:55am CST
I have just finished watching the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States..........it was very moving, and the crowds were the largest in U.S. history. As a Canadian, I would like to offer my congratulations to all the Americans here, and everywhere, on not only making history today, but in having the courage to do so at such a difficult time in global history itself, in the manner in which is has been done........namely electing a Black President in an increasingly volatile world of race, religion and yes even color. As a matter of interest....it was our own Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, who was the first world leader to offer his congratulations today and to pledge his support to the new administration. So congrats America; stand tall, stand proud, and continue doing what you do best......keeping the world on edge for what you'll do next! lol Did you watch the coverage? How did it make you feel?

Thank you Sparky. Today I am so freakin PROUD to say I'm an American. I was tired of hanging my head in shame of thing we have done. One of the best things about being an American is waking up every morning on edge wondering what the hell we will do next!!! I believe that President Obama can do for the whole world what he will be doing for the US. There are GREAT days ahead my friend!!!

I, too, worry for his safety. Yet I know our Billy Badazzes well enough to know he will be over protected at first. Then I pray he will win over the hearts of those who have closed their hearts to this point. For the first time in my life, I don't see a President who is standing tall for just one party & those who voted for him. He will be a Man for the People!!! Yes, I'm expecting a lot out of him. Not because he is black, but because he has promised that it will happen & he has made a believer out of me!!!

I did watch this inauguration, nor have I ever watched one. They seem so boring and, well, simply a waste of taxpayers money The only part that truly matters is when his hand is on the Bible and he takes the oath. That part I can see on the nightly news

Passing the coffee.....fresh brewed from the finest Columbian beans! I've watched several over the years, and I have to say, this one was the most impressive. It's the after celebrations that cost the money.........

*gulps down the coffee* Thanks Since we are in economic turmoil at the moment, you'd think even the politicians could figure out that that money could best be spent elsewhere

I hadn't intended to watch it but was ready for a break from work when he gave his inaugural address. I didn't vote for him based on his politics, but I wish him well. He is our President. I don't know if the change he spoke of is good or bad for the US. Time will tell. I am proud that we could elect an African American and keep racist attitudes (on both sides) at a very low level. We've come a long way as a nation, but there are those among us who haven't. Obama has courage and for that, I respect him.

Hi peavey, nice to see you. I really really hope this is a successful administration. The thought of what could happen to racial tensions if it's not is rather scary. As you said, you've come a long way as a nation, and this election is so important in so many ways...especially at home. My thoughts are will you all.

I took the day off today. As a private business owner and independent contractor it was a costly proposition, but worth it. I watched at home with a Mimosa in one hand and my Bahamian husband next too me. I was moved, to say the least. My tears flowed freely as Barack H. Obama took the oath of office. I laughed aloud as he spoke about the change that was needed. I was moved again as he spoke to the world and the nation. I remember the Civil Rights movement, I was young but because of what and who I am was affected deeply. I remember the South as it was and the division even within my own family. I am prouder today of America than I have been in a very long time.

I am so sick of all that bull crap! All I ever hear is: An African American, an African American, A black man as president, give me a break! Not one single person EVER mentions his WHITE side! He is NOT an African American! He is mixed, half and half, but all they ever say is: An African American!

THANK YOU! I said the same thing in my response, i am so sick of it too. I think it is the worst thing ever for people to publicize and hype on, and if I were 'the first black president' the first thing I'd say was 'I am not black and we aren't going to talk about that any more'. LOL!

Sparks I watched very little of it as I am having my own problems right now in this world of no jobs and little prospects out there to count on. But then these are things I have to deal with. I won't bore you all with the details. I just don't know what to think about the changes going on other than they must get better and if Obama can do it then he should.

I don't know sparks the things I have heard about the jobs he is going to generate is all in the government that won't help any of us out here that just lost the jobs due to the econmy that we face now. He is going to generate thousands of new jobs in the governemt. We need more noey out here for the jobs that exist or did before all of this happened. All of the people that have lost their jobs and homes. All of us are not as lucky to be in government and be able to partake of these new jobs he will start. As this has not been our lifes work but in other fields that has kept this econmy going for many years. it's the government that has let us down and they want to produce more jobs for people in government. I jsut don't know sparks. I do really hope and pray that what he does helps but I don't think it will before many of us lose most of what we have worked all of our lives to have. As this is already being shown in todays lives of many people.

Nope, I didn't watch it. The US got a new president. Yep, I knew that. I think it is great that they elected an African-American though. But I fear for him, with all the bigotry out there. I'm somewhat despondent about it, really, since if he turns out to be a really good president, that wants to right wrongs and make change for good, then those ones usually get assasinated. I will make a wish here that that doesn't happen to him, though. I really wish the US would get a president in that would make the changes necessary to bring more peace and less wars. Bush just disgusted me completely. I swear he made up reasons to have wars with anyone possible and blocked so many peace efforts. But then, I tend to stick my head in the ground and hope that things just don't get worse. I can't change anything that US politics is doing from Canada, after all. But unfortunately we are so tied to them, that we end up being mirrors to each other on certain issues.

Now, for a little inaugural humor....Do you know why it has been so cold this winter? It is the fault of all us Caucasians and our talk of "It's gonna be a cold day in hell when a black man becomes president of the US." lol Have a great day, Sparks!!

Hi Sparks I did not watch and have never watched them. In all my 26, almost 27, years I have never seen so much median attention as I saw with this one. I tried to watch the CANADIAN news last night and that was not happening because of the whole inauguration thingy LOL So I flipped to smallville. Until this guys proves what he has been saying I really don't care much about him coming into office. When he proves to all the Americans that he can undo what bush did I don't think many non believers will care too much. I hope for the best and pray we don't see the worst.

That is partially his fault tho. If he didn't want to be this icon he shouldn't have said it all if he can't back it up. LOL Canadian tv does still exist despite the US take over The reason behind all the commercials is more because Canadians just don't put the budget into their movies and shows so they aren't as good. I think that sux and they need to get with the times already.

I guess the whole world was watching him in his inauguration day. I think the world is really impressed by what he has accomplished and also amazed at how people supported him on this day. It was indeed a show that Americans are starting to realize that racial discrimination is starting to evolve into something more positive than it was before.

As it all happened at about 2am in my morning I missed the coverage, I am yet to turn the TV on but something tells me there will be plenty of repeats throughout the day so I won't miss out on the good bits! I did actually get a transcript of his speech, I started reading it and then unfortunately I lost interest, but I have bookmarked it for a rainy day! It is great that at long last colour seems not to make a difference to people anymore. This certainly is a great step forward for the human race. Let's hope he knows what he is doing!

yes no doubt the coverage will last for days to come, I won't be surprised if they extend our news so they can fit it all in. I know that this could very well be the day that changed the world but do they have to keep going on about? We get more coverage on this election than when we have our own!

I did not watch the coverage BUT I heard bits and pieces from everybody who did. I have to say one thing that really bothers me is all the hubbub and fuss about 'America's first black president'. WHY can't people just be excited that we finally don't have to deal with Bush? The whole campaign was smeared with racial and gender things.... if it wasn't about 'black' it was about HILARY or SARAH PALIN which meant it was about 'women'. Blah. Are we all THAT narrow minded and I guess prejudiced to fixate on those things? Why couldn't we just NOT bring those up? I cringed EVERY time I heard mention of those things and I still do. I think it is petty and ridiculous to mention them even once, and to use those over and over in relation to the candidates for 2 years made it even worse. We are not blind or stupid, we can see and we know. Doesn't mean it's even one of the 3 most important things about the candidates. In my opinion many other things were MUCH more important and THOSE should have been what was talked about, NOT race or gender. People need to remember, Obama is HALF WHITE too. Does that mean nothing? Gosh, he is just a man and he is hoping to do his best. I don't know if that means the right sorts of changes, if anything I just want relief from this global economic crisis and some research into all the corruption in government.

My sis/i/law had surgery around the pituitary gland, removing a mass or tumor - don't know which. They got most of it, but think it definitely was malignant. This would be the 3rd time she's had cancer. But, she came through the surgery fine, no problems, and was awake in 2 hours after they started. IT didn't take as long as they thought, but it took them over 4 hours after she got out of recovery to get her a room in the Surgical ICU! That should never have happened, so we didn't get to see her. We left right before the 5PM time to go back and there were too many there that we decided to leave. She had told Alex to tell everyone she was okay and we could all go home even when she first woke up.
