What is your first remedy for minor wounds?

My daughter is a very active girl and she loves to run around every time she goes out. As a result whenever she's too excited to go out she trips and gets minor wounds in her knees. What I did is I just disinfected it with Alcohol and I put band-aid so that she won't touch it. This morning I removed it so that the wound would heal much faster. A few people who saw her wound said that we should put something like penicillin, an antibiotic (amoxicillin), or betadine over it. What do you guys use as first aid for minor wounds? Do you have anything that is in your cabinet which you can use in case something happens? Please share...

Honestly, for most minor little scrapes and cuts, I don't do a single thing. I pick the kid up, look at the boo-boo, maybe give them a kiss and say "You'll live". I've got 5 kids, 4 of them are boys who get scrapes and cuts every 5 minutes. If I stopped the presses everytime they had a tiny little ouchie so that I could disinfect it and bandage it, I'd never have a second to do anything else!! If it's a cut that seems to be bleeding a lot, or if they're still complaining about it 5 minutes later, then I'll make sure to take care of it.

In my medicine cabinet, for those minor cuts and bruises i use Melaleuca oil T36C5. I find it helps and the cuts or bruises do not look as bad as when the band aid is applied

You done a great job for the minor wounds. People are always offering advice that is sometimes way over the top of a minor wound. I would have done as you had. But keep a good eye on it for any changes and if you see redness then it might be best to peroxide it then add something like Neosporin antibiotic salve. Some antibiotic salves can prolong the healing time actually so sometimes it is best to let it heal without it unless needed.

I agree. I will buy a first aid kit for my family since these things are unavoidable. Thanks for the response!

I perfer to put some antibiotics in the case of small wound and let it be open and not put any type of band-id on it jst coz i experience that once i clean it with antibiotics and keep it open, it heal faster then if i put any band-id which actually make the wound more worse then it present state. however, for bigger wound im not hesitate to take injection also as a perventative measure. im not doctor by nature so always keep the advice of doctor first. My son too gets minor wounds often. We used to apply some Dettol (an antiseptic lotion) first, apply soframycin ointment on the wounds and leave it uncovered. If the wound is by a metal thing (particularly iron) we go to doctor and get an antiseptic TT injection. We keep the antiseptic lotion, soframycin, band-aids and some other first aids always in our home. Some common cough syrups too.

yes an antibiotic is important to make sure no infection gets in. And the wound must always remain clean.

I use lanocaine or the no name equivalent after washing it with soap and water and patting it dry. I will then put a bandage over it. It depends on the bandages. I had this cut on my ankle and every time I took a bath, the bandage came off. It drove me crazy. But the wound healed eventually. I am sort of accident prone.

I tend to use TCP, then if needed I will put a plaster on it for a couple of days like you but then take it off to let the wound to the air. Doing it htat way the wound heals more quickly and keeping TCP on there now and then during the day wil disinfect it...also keeping it clean too by washing...littleowl

Hydrogen Peroxide (in the brown bottle 3%)!!! That is a staple in our medicine cabinet. For minor cuts, scrapes, open wounds, just pour a bit over the sore. It will bubble up and clean out the sore, getting rid of germs, etc. right away. I also use an anti-biotic ointment when I first put a bandaid on the sore just in case and depending on the type of wound. I have a 13 year old boy, so this has been my life for 13 years! :-)

Hey quinnkl thanks for mentioning the percentage. I saw that in the bottle when I bought the hydrogen peroxide. Here in our country the brand name is Agua Oxigenada. I never knew that it was wounds. I just heard about that name in a story or something.

First, I rinse it well with water. Then, I use peroxide and antibiotic ointment then cover it in band-aids.

First i will wash the wound with clean water and follow your procedure because all dirt will get washed away and there is no chance for infection.

No kids dont need antibiotic shots all the time. All they need is Immunized of tetanus texoid (TT injection ) during infant hood and booster dose every 5 years and thats it. So a bandaid should be good enough for minor cuts and wounds.

I am not sure betadine should be used when a wound is still open. If she gets a lot of dirt into the wound it could get infected, but I see no reason why you should start of with an antibiotic just for scraping your knees. Disinfecting is allways a good way to go with these minor things and putting a band-aid on it is fine aswell. Removing the band-aid once there is a scab on her knees seems very logical aswell so the wound will be able to breathe. I am signing up for a first aid for children class soon and I am pretty sure they will talk about minor wounds there aswell, but basicly following your motherly instinct is the best with these minor things. If it does get infected or it looks funny I am sure you are wise enough to consult a doctor about this, and these minor things will mostly heal pretty much by themselves, it's a part of growing up that includes 'falling down' .

Washing it with soap under running water is the first remedy I guess for minor wounds. Since it would just heal on its own, putting some band-aid as what you did to your daughter is already enough for the wound to provide a convenient way to hold the wound closures.

Well if its for minor scrapes and cuts, I always keep antibiotic ointment like Neosporin in my cabinet, I use the generic brand of course but it works just as good. If you want to use something like penicillin or amoxicillin you can't get it over the counter, you'll have to get a prescription from your doctor. But thats what I use is the antibiotic ointment, they even have one that has a pain reliever in it.

Hi yuna15, When we were kids, my mother always put Germoline cream on our minor injuries and I still use it on us and my friends' children and their grandchildren, it works wonders. Tamara

well the first thing I do when i get a wound is wash it with cold water so that it stops bleeding and the dirts get cleaned out then put a plastic band aid in it so that it wont get wet. Oh yea its better if you regularly change the band aid so that the wound heals faster. Its also good to change it everyday so that it wont pain. Band aid might stick to your skin very strong if you keep the same band aid for more than 24 hours
