i remember watching tv when i was little cartoons would show characters getting blacks eyes and they would always request a steak to put on it.. i mean i get that the steak was frozen but why not say ice or bag of veggies etc? is there any logic to this or what??! i dont know about you but im not holding up meat to my face!!

In the past, there was no such thing as a fridge. And the only cool things that can stay cool is a piece of meat. Steak is usually used as it is the biggest cut with no bones in the middle to hurt you when you place it over the bruise area.
Now with refridgeration so common, and frozen vegetables easily available, it is a good alternative to the steak.
Ice was not preferred cos when it melts, it is really messy.

Never put raw meat on a black eye. It is a first aid myth that putting steak on a black eye will help it heal faster. It will not. In fact, putting raw meat on a black eye is more likely to cause an infection (E coli).
During the first 24-48 hours, place an icepack lightly on the black eye for about 20 minutes of each waking hour. Do not leave ice on the eye for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Ice works to decrease swelling, but there's not really anything that can be done about the discolouration!
Hope that answers your question x

boy you are coming up with some really good ones today, you got me stumped again, I always thought it was just because it was frozen but I also remember something about it drawing out the blood underneath (which has turned black) but I don't know if that is an old wives tale of it is true.

That is definitely an old wives tale. I would imagine it probably started with the fact that raw meat is cool and made it feel better. But putting raw meat anywhere near your mucous membranes is just stupid and dangerous... not to mention gross!
My mother used to keep a bag of frozen peas in the freezer specifically for injuries. It conforms perfectly to any area of the body.

peas make sense but meat doesnt.. maybe the old wives tale started before they did a lot of freezing veggies or something
