Our beloved Philippines is one the countries that belongs to a Third World Countries. There are so many problems that revolves our country. Number one problem is our political situation that's why we can't go onward if we will be talking of progress. The other problem of ours is poverty. One proof of that is we have so many beggars roaming around asking, begging for alms. In our province, we have a city ordinance banning people from giving alms to beggars. This has an advantages and disadvantages effects on our society. Whatever those pros and cons, it's going to be a long story. On myself I still give alms but selective ways. I never give those who has still well physic, able bodied beggars. I might be just tolerating them being lazy people. Never to those beggars carrying their young children with them asking help house to house. Street children; I seldom give money because I know where the money goes, instead I converted it to food to make sure that money I would give serves for its purpose. Some of the street children, if you're going to give cash, they would just gamble it or buy solvent to make them high (like drugs). How about you guys what's your stand on beggars and street children in your country?

I believe that each country has beggars or their own version of it. It just up to the society they belong in to cover them up or address their needs or do something.

You're right. If the government would just give attention their needs and give shelters I am sure the government can cover them up and would be hide in the society. Thanks for your share of ideas..

You're welcome. I think that it's not only the government's problem but the whole community's as well. We have to work together to ensure that they are taken care of.

I have people asking me for money, and sometimes I cna give and others I just do not have the means to help at that time. I will not say it is as bad as where you live, but sometimes it gets annoying to me especially if they are asking me for 2 dollars, it seems unreasonable to me that not only are they asking me for money but telling me how much. Most of the times people are asking for people to help them with the bus fare tho.

That's too much I think. In that way, the more I would not give. Demanding something is not anymore begging for alms, demanding bus fare and asking $2 that's too much. The more I would not give...thanks

We have two varieties of beggars...the really poor beggars and the rich beggars. The rich beggars even own flats, and they "work" (beg) for a few hours everyday. The lives of the really poor ones is pathetic though. Cheers and happy Mylotting

I think there are ordinances in the city that ensure there aren't beggars as well. There's a clean up that goes on from time to time and you'll see police officers picking up beggars and leaving them elsewhere. I get that "elsewhere" is not huge enough to house the beggars so they eventually get out and roam the streets again. I never give them anything though no matter how pitiful they look because most beggars are part of a syndicate group. They have a "boss" who pays off the cops so that the beggars will be allowed to beg. Sometimes I give a bit to the old women and the teenage girls who have babies on their back. But it's really bad to encourage this form of livelihood.

Yeah you're right there are ordinance and clean up operation done by our government but no consistency. Impose strictly today, loosen the next day. Yeah, there are syndicate involve and connected to some beggars that's why I refrain from giving alms to them. I would only give those really in need for its purpose. Thanks

yes its ture that begging is the biggest problem in any country.i am from india and although it is a developing country i think its just the poverty and people belowt the poverty line are the biggest concern today.because its pulling down the economy of our country.beggars keep wandering at traffic signals and at times they even come under the vehicles and die.children get fallen into wrong things and run scams and make it a habit of begging.they donot want to work.so this matter shuold be highly taken into consideration and we all should try to do something to end it once for all.government should take steps to provide them with shelter and jobs and also qualification.

Yes in Canada there are street people, and their are agencies to help them with food and a shower and a warm bed to sleep in at night but it is not enough. They ask for money on the street and people give to them as well. Poor people are not poor because they are lazy, they are poor because they cannot find work, they are uneducated, maybe even mentally ill.

hello there I live in Philippines too. And yes, it is really true that there are lots of beggars here especially in the city. Well, there are beggars everywhere even in other country but I don't really blame the government for that (fully) because I believe we are responsible for ourselves. I have seen other people who reach to their top from being very poor. However, my concern for beggars are the kids who ask for alms in the street... they are so fragile and I feel for them but I am very firm with my decision whether I will give money or food to them. If someone begs for food or money, i give it to them but i prefer giving foods because i know it will go straight to their "tummy". However, there are beggars who would ask money to buy rugby or some cheap solvent, in that case, I don't give any money to them. Once I tried to give them my biscuit but they refused it so i just left without giving money. Thank you for the discussion and Happy mylotting! Have a great day. Cheers!

How about those minorities asking alms, like badjaos and aetas which common on the streets. The worst is this badjaos once you would give them the other one another one and more to come asking also. You're right I think our authorities would fine solutions not just with their won concerns..thanks

Hello mobhomier, I've never seen any homeless or hungery children where I live but I see homeless people all the time and beggars in the streets of my city. I live in one of the poorest big cities in the USA and even though our poverty my be at a different level than yours it still is poverty. I do give to beggars and homeless people when I can and I don't care what they do with the money I give them. Once I give it too them it's theirs and I have know say so, and besides it's the thought that counts. God knows your intentions and thats all that I care about. I'm not a rich man I live check by check like most Americans but I believe in helping anyway I can, GBY.

Well, that's your opinion I'll support on that. For me I just don't like giving money if the money I gave would just tolerate things not right for the purpose. Thanks on your ideas..cheers

My country used to have beggars, The majority were really poor while the rest were simply too lazy to work. As the economy of the country rises, the government took steps to eradicate beggars. Those caught begging would be taken to the Welfare Department. This to a certain extent managed to eradicate lazy beggars. Theoretically there should not be beggars in my country. Poor people can get help from the government, religious bodies, and caring relatives (unfortunately the ungrateful ones took the money and tell other people they are being victimised). If you come to my country and happen to see beggars chances are they are from other countries. I have not seen any local beggars for more than 20 years. all the best, rosdimy

That is one of the problems that our government should take a serious action. I'm also from Philippines and I am very aware of that. We can't deny the fact that philippines is a country where curruption is a very worst problem. Every election, politicians are giving promises such as houses for every people, enough jobs that each people will be employed and many more. Well sadly, we are all victims of such promises because we believed on that ptomises but then the moment they are in the position, it seems that they forgot what they had promised to us during the election. They seems to forgot that the main reason why they reached that position is because we belived on them and they should do their promise. Unfortunately, we are all the victims. Street people were just on of those people who suffered because of that kind of government. They are all scattered in the streets becaue they do not have their own house that is why they make street as their house. Well if the government officials cannot do their job well, as a part of our contry,we can do our job to prevent this kind of problem. We should be wiser now. Especially that the presidential election is near approaching. This coming 2011,we will again do our very important job. And that is to vote. Let us not do the same mistake that we did last election. We should choice wisely so that atleast we can help those people in the street to have their own house when we have the people in the government who are responsible in doing their duty in our country.

Yes you're right. These beggars and street children of ours would not be gone as long as our government would not be awaken of the way we select officials that could lead us to progress. Whoever would take over terms after terms still the same. Greedy and corrupt kind of government officials. Just like a playing record, the same version of song but just different singers. Corruption is a cancer of our society
