Would you have done it?

I needed some cooking wine to go with a dish I was preparing.
So I headed down to the local store to get some.
As there are numerous brands, I have to search for one that is, well, value for money.
As such, I scanned the shelves when I reached the store. This particular brand caught my eye. It has a high alcohol content. So I looked for the price tag. There were two placed side by side on the shelf.
One was for $10.80 for the 630ml bottle. And the other was for $21.09 for the 600ml bottle.
So I looked at the label again. On the bottle, it was indicated as 620ml.
I scratched my head. There is no price tag for 620ml. And looking at the two price tags, the bottles were placed above the 630ml price tag. So, ensuring that I got the bottles from the 630ml shelf, armed with $32.40, I proceeded to the cashier to make my payment.
To my surprise, I was told to pay $63.27 when the cashier rang up my purchased.
Being a forgetful fella, I thought I got the price wrong. Peeved, I paid up so that I do not make a scene at the cashier. I went back to the shelf with my receipt to double check on my purchase and there it was! The two price tags are side by side and the product is placed a top of the $10.80 price tag.
So I went to the customer service and made a complaint. The floor supervisor was kind enough to entertain my frustrations. And then explained to me that there was a mistake in the tagging. The product I bought was priced at $21.09 and that the $10.80 bottle is out of stock.
The supervisor then offer to take back the product and refund me the full amount.
I wasn't placated. I then went on to explain that such mistakes shouldn't be happening. AND that I bought the bottle that was placed on top of the $10.80 price tag. I then insisted that I be charged that price as it is only fair to me.
Cos if the tagging had be correct, I would have made a different decision on getting that product.
Moreover, the claim that the $10.80 bottle is out of stock and the item is priced $21.09 is just too convenient to be pulled as a fast one on me. I cannot accept the explanation.
The supervisor then sigh and asked me if I am going to insist on getting the product in dispute. I, being frustrated at the whole situation, nodded my head in adamant.
She then shrugged and sigh again and paid me the difference in the pricing of the two products.
I thank her and then left the store.
On my way out of the store, being placated by the refund, I stared at the refunded notes in my hand.
Then a sense of guilt started to over come me. I suddenly had this thought, "Am I taking advantage of the store?"
What would you have done in my shoes?

lol =D My friend had encountered the same thing like u do, but she only ask for a refund for the difference and nothing much.. Actually u need not feel guilty too because it's human nature to see and take, believe in whatever is right in front of us..
And since it's their mistake, so why should we be paying for it?? If i'm in the same shoes, i might not react like u do, and i will leave just like what my friend has done ^_^ After all, since the bottle u want is out of stock, and there's no point in argueing anymore.. For other customers whom are watching, it's either they say u are petty or the store is wrong.. So either way, i will just wanna save myself this kind of embarassment for they wont know how we are really feeling at that point of time. haha

Hmm... that is exactly what I did when it happend to me in an earlier incident.
I had bought something that was indicated as $8. But I was charged $12 instead.
I was peeved. But I swallowed it and blame it on my own carelessness for not making sure.
That was a $4 difference then. And later I feel so stupid to have been paying for the mistake of the store.
This time round it is a frigging $30++ difference leh.
Of course I am not going stand by and be forking out this difference.
That is why I let my frustrations out on the store supervisor.
But I must say, for my loud behavior, she really was polite and patient when handling me as a customer.
Kudos to her for her good work!

haha.. YEah, $30 is really a huge difference u could have bought another 2 bottles of the cheapest one if the stock is there.. haha =D
Of course she has to be patient, because she's a supervisor and being in the sales line, it's natural that she resolves the thing well and ensuring customer satisfaction.. haha

Hi ahgong,
Wow! Can tell me which store that is? I want to con some goodies too. It came as a surprise to me that you actually succeeded in getting the difference.
Yes it was misleading but unless it was obviously a ploy to cheat you (unlikely since you mentioned floor manager so I gather it is a big chain of stores like e.g. ntuc or whatever).
For me, if I am unsure of the price, I would get it checked first. I will ask a staff (so that she can cut queue to check price) or go to the cashier if it is not a long queue there.

Well, I did not insist on getting the price difference on the purpose of getting cheap products. I was peeved at being led around. And having it happened to me once before, I am not about to let history repeat itself!
Not when the amount is so big!
And I did check with the price tags and the way the products are placed before I made that decision!
Maybe I will adopt your method. Grab a staff to ask to ensure before I make the purchase.

No your not taking advantage of the store they should have their stuff in order. So many tmes I go into the store and have only 20 bucks so I want to know what I am buying and how much I have left over. I don't want to know when I get to the cash register I want to know in private at the shelf. So no I don't think your in the wrong here.

Thanks for the response baileycows.
So, being in my shoes, would you have insisted on being charged the lower price of the two tags?
Or would you have returned the product altogether and get back the full refund? Then go back to the shelf to seek out another product of a lower price?
