That is the name of our local dialect here in Jamaica. It is pronounced patwah or patwa. The Jamaican patois is actually a mixture of languages from West and central Africa and English. The patwa for hello is...wah a gwaan... Check out this short video on learning the dialect. www.howcast.com/videos/19884-How-To-Greet-People-in-Jamaican-Patois - 58k - What is your native dialect? Do share something said in your dialect and give the english for it.

I am fascinated by dialect and am amazed no one ever responded to this discussion. Im from the UK and, as you probably know, there are hundreds of dialects across the country ranging from Jordi to Black Country, West Country, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Mancunian, Yorkshire and last, but not least Cockney. There are more, but there isnt room here to mention them all. I now live in Spain and the same can be said of this country. I live in a region called Communidad Valencia and they have dialect all of their own. For example "buenos dias" meaning good day in Spanish is said "bon dia" in Valenciana, buenos noches (spanish for good evening and used as a greeting rather than a farewell) translates to bona nit in Valenciana. I love the differences here and they stem from invasions from countries throughout the centuries who left their mark on this country.

Seems to occur pretty regularly around the 'lot' where certain discussions just dont seem to get that much attention. I do believe too that it has to do with a strong network of friends. There are so many discussions which make very little sense as a discussion pulls in many responses. Thanks for responding to my zero rated discussions and sorry I am just commenting. I havent been on mylot much for a few days now. Im at work and just checking in and try to resolve 1 or 2 discussions. I actually thought this would have been a fun discussion as foriegners generally enjoy trying to learn the local dialect. You seem to have a good knowledge of dialects. I became aware of the various dialects in Italy through a penpal I had there once. My bad we lost touch.
