Does the laundry detergent you use make that much of a difference?

For years I've used All or the Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. I've also used Wisk and Era. All seem to do a good job of cleaning and I don't really notice a difference except in the price. I have noticed our darker colored clothes just don't seem to hold their color as long as I would like. After about a year they look a bit worn and faded. I use a cup of vinegar when I wash the new darks the first time. I'm wondering if switching to something like the Woolite laundry detergent would help keep our clothes looking newer longer? What has been your experience?

The laundry detergent doesn't realy matter with me. I use homemade detergent, and it seems like it works like the store bought stuff. It works all the same. I like it.

I've read the homemade detergent does work pretty well.

It seems like it works quite well for me. I'm even using homemade fabric softener. I haven't tried my new batch yet, but it seems like it works alright.

I just use the cheapest laundry soap and I use vinegar for fabric softener and have never had problems. In fact when I use the more expensive like tide my family breaks out. I have only found one type that we are not all allergic to. Lucky for us it is cheap 2.50 for a huge bottle.

We can't use tide either. Same problem - my husband breaks out!
