What have you lent that has come back dirty or damaged?

Many years ago I allowed my flat mate to borrow my typewriter. (I told you it was a long time ago!) and aside from the fact that I had to ask for it to be returned, it came back to me with damaged keys. I am still not over it! She used to ruin my books and lose items of clothing she borrowed too. What have you lent that has come back dirty or damaged?

It's really annoying when things like this happen; and especially when the person returning the item is absolutely oblivious! I gave a Nokia handset to a guy who works for me to use and he returned it to me 6 months later with it looking like it had spent the last half year at the bottom of the ocean! The buttons were all worn off, the battery had expanded and would not fit into the phone anymore and the whole handset is now impossible to use. His reasoning? "I didn't realize it was YOUR phone!" What difference does it make if it was mine or not??? lol. Some people just have no respect for other's property. I will never loan him anything like that again. Problem solved!

Thanks for choosing me for the BR Paula! By the way, I STILL give the guy who ruined my phone a hard time at least once a week, so all's good and I doubt he'll ever do anything like it again! lol.

Hello paula27661! I remember when I was in college. Someone borrowed a book from me. I lent her the book. But you know what happen? It took her so long to return it and if I didn't asked her about it she won't give it back to me. Plus, the book looked awful already.

Don't you hate it? It's not pleasant having to ask for it to be returned! Thanks for responding!

This is tough! I feel you gotta be rude at some point in life and this is one such situation. We gotta have your foot down and say NO next time she asks for anything else. and you have enough reasons also. And do not be guilty. Be cool and express yourself in a decent way that you cannot.

Thanks for responding. I don't live with her anymore, all this happened quite a few years ago. Thankfully we eventually resolved the issue! Have a nice day!

Oh I don't like lending things out for this very reason. Back when I was a teenager I lent a friend of mine a dress that I had. I didn't have too many dresses to begin with which made this dress extra special to me. I didn't like having to ask for it back, but knew she was done with it. She put it off a few times and I started to worry that it was ruined. Finally she got it back to me, but sure enough there were some spots on it that weren't there before, nor would they come out, and the bow in the back was ripped and hanging by just about a thread. Needless to say I didn't let people borrow things from me for a long time.

Oh what a shame! That would have broken my little heart! It's difficult to say no, but experiences like this push you to the point of no return. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Paula, There is a saying 'neither a lender or borrower be' and I guess this is the reason. I have in the past lent books and never had the returned so now I give the person the ISBN number and they can go get their own copy if they want to read it that much, I have been stung too many times so now I just don't. I would rather give than lend this way there is no hurt involved as you are not expecting the item back. Huggles. Ellie :D

You are so right! I don't lend as much as I used to, and when I do now, I do it with the expectation that it won't be returned. Less painful. Thanks for the response!
