Have you ever taken the Amtrak train anywhere?

I'm going to be on Amtrak 3 days going to California and 3 days coming back! With all the baloney you have to go through to fly I decided this was my best bet. I am not one who deals well with inconvenience and am looking forward to this trip very much. I have no time constraints and from what I've read on their site I should have a very nice trip. I've taken a grayhound bus there in the past and don't mind sitting up to sleep although the seats look pretty comfortable. I also plan to try to get a sleeper half way through my trip. It's cheaper than getting it from the beginning. There will be stops in what looks like very interesting places and a car especially for "site seeing". Have you ever ridden on an amtrak train any distance? What were your experiences if you did? Would you consider trying it?

I never had the chance to do this but I would love to. How long is your trip for? I hope you have a great time and keep us posted. It sure sounds like fun, and all the stops should be very interesting. And how much fun is it going to be sleeping in a sleeper? What an adventure. Wish I was going, lol! Have a good time!

It takes 3 days to get there and I'm really psyched about it! It's something I've always wanted to do and now am doing!

Yeh, I always wanted to go on a train and sleep in a berth, haha. Sounds like one big PJ party. I remember once reading that Amtrak thought about having a trip to the Grand Canyon but I think that fell through. That would have been awesome for everyone. I might have done that back then. Don't forget, take lots of pic's.

I'm pretty sure they DO have that trip to the Grand Canyon and it's one of the stops on my way to LA...I'll let you know.

I have traveled by bus, car, and plane. But I haven't taken a train yet. It would be a nice thing to try. New experiences sometimes make nice memories. We recently became a family of four. A train trip would be a nice thing to do together once the baby is old enough.

From what my Mom told me my family did a lot of traveling by train way back before Amtrak was even thought about. She told me some very funny stories!

I have never ridden a long distance on any type of train actually. I have ridden on special trips by rail in the past. Short jaunbts for the most part of a few short miles is all. Up north in Duluth I rode a historic train for about 10 miles distance through tree lined rails and water everywhere with rickety bridges. That was awesome to do. But I would not want a long train ride as I hate slowness. Put me in a jet for long trips please. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I take Amtrak all the time. Its my preferred method to get to my parents house because they let you sit in your wheelchair the whole time. They also don't break the wheelchair the way the planes do. I take the train to Washington DC about 4 times a year for events. Amtrak is the way to go if your in a wheelchair I think.

I have ridden an Amtrak train from Washington, DC to NYC before. I was very pleased with the service, and the seats were very comfortable. The leg room compared to a airplane is amazing. I also liked having a plug in so I didn't have to worry about my computer running out of battery while watching a movie. The train wasn't filled up so I was able to have a seat to myself for the entire trip as well. The comfort and relaxed atmosphere were huge pluses in my traveling experience. I think you have made a good decision if time truly isn't a factor. Three days seems like a very long time to travel when you can get there in half of a day via plane. If you are looking for comfort in your travel then I think you will be pleased with the train service.

From the pictures I've seen on their site you are right...plenty of leg room! I just can't deal with a lot of "junk" you go through when you fly. I think this will be less stressful for me.
