What do you do when you dont have a bunch a people for referrals ?!?

I dont have a very long list a freinds that I can refer and it bugs me.I see people making money on these sites and from what I've read it's threw referrals.I have maybe 3 or 4 freinds,but there all afraid to join these sites,why is beyond me.Geez.
