Are your dogs afraid of firecrackers?

During this Chinese New Year festival, many Chinese are playing firecrackers. I brought my lovely dog, Labby back to my hometown, and she's happily playing with my brother-in-law's dog, which is a Labrador too. My brother-in-law told me, when he played with the firecrackers, his dog just ran to the backyard of the house and hide, as she was really afraid of the sound of firecrackers. But, my Labby just followed him and watched him playing firecrackers. I've heard that most of the dogs are afraid of firecrackers or thundering, but Labby is not afraid of loud sounds since she was young, we do not know why. Perhaps she is too busybody, she just likes to see what's happening and the sounds will not frighten her.

It's always a huge problem for my family when we're preparing for a new year's eve because when we want to go somewhere else to celebrate ... we have to take care of our dog so that she's not left alone. She's evidently not like your dog. My dog fears the fireworks and so she fears the thundering. And i think there's no way to change it anymore. So it's good for you that your dog gets used to it when she's young because she is never going to fear loud sounds which is good for you - you won't have problems like we do :-D

Hi there, thanks for your response. Yeah, I was afraid my dog would be scared by the thundering or fireworks when she was young, but she seemed interested in looking at the fireworks happily. I think it's kinda difficult to change, it seems like they are just born to be like that, right?

Hi kaka! My dogs are afraid if they happen to be outside when they go off but if they are in the house they just bark and are looking curiously out the window. You are lucky your pet isn't afraid. A lot of pets are terrified.

2 out of our 3 dogs are afraid of fireworks. We try to keep them in the basement during the display that way they don't hear them as much as they would upstairs. They still don't like them especially when my neighbors set them off at like 1 am.

Animals tend to react strongly toward things unfamiliar to them. I once read from a textbook that when automobiles were first invented, they frightened a lot of horses which were pulling wagens on the said road. Another instance is about the elephants, which intruded into villages. At first, fireworks became no more effective.
