This photo shows yet another craqving I have. Animal Crackers in a huge container. This is also my banana rack I use. I read somewhere recvently a neat trick I'll have to test soon as well about bananas turning brown. When bananas start to turn brown keep them seperate from each other. Doing this keeps them from browning too quickly. I guess the closeness causes the action of browning to wquicken. Have you heard this before about brown bananas etc? Do you also use a rack like this to store your bananas? If not do you just lay them on the table? Do you keep thm refridgerated at all?

I don't keep bananas long enough for them to turn brown. I buy 6 lbs of bananas a week, but they're gone within a few days... that's what happens when you have a family of 7. I just keep them on the kitchen counter, I used to have a rack, but haven't a clue what happened to it.
Since my bananas never seem to go brown, sometimes I will purposely buy brown bananas at a huge discount in order to make my banana bread.

Hi Grandpa Bob,
My daughter and I love bananas so they hardly ever go brown in our household. The only time they seem to is if we go away for 3 or 4 days. I actually don't mind when they do go brown though because all I do is stick them in the freezer and when I get into a "baking mood" I turn them into banana chocolate chip muffins! MMMmmmmm yum yum! I have never heard of separating them before, but if it ever comes down to it I will definitely give it a whirl! Thanks for the tip!

When we do buy bananas we don't buy too many at a time and they are usually eaten before they turn brown. I don't have a banana rack either, hadn't even thought of getting one but that would be something good for me to get for my daughter or tell her to get one since she buys more bananas more often than I do.

I love the rack actually.
Got a paper towel rack that matches as well.

I noticed in a catalogue a few weeks ago they had a banana hanger. It was a chrome thingie with a hook at the top, and the bananas were hung on that. It allegedly stops them from ripening too quickly, or from touching other fruit in the bowl. Looked pretty nifty! You can also buy plastic, curved banana holders now, for putting in lunchboxes so the bananas don't get squished. In Australia, bananas go soft and mushy very quickly after a morning in a schoolbag or lunchbox - so it's a great idea!

Well as fruity as I am they don't get a chance to turn brown! LOL Have you ever tried the "green bag?" I haven't but it is supposed to absorb some king of gases that fruit and veggies emits causing them to stay fresher longer. So it makes sense to seperate them and reduce the gases.
My solution is eat them faster! LOL
Have a great day!

I have heqard of the green bag but yet to try it.
Mostly because I use the nanans too soon as well.
This is tyhe theroy of this hint as well.
Keep the gasses away from each other to slow the browning process down I guess.

Eat them faster is right LoL! That's some great advice! I have heard of the green bag too, my boss at work uses it for her veggies and she said it works great so that is another option!

I think the gas giving off by the bananas as they ripen cause them to ripen, so packing them to tightly or in bags or a small area will make them ripen faster.
I don't have a problem with my bananas...I usually have one at breakfast and another on my PB sandwich for lunch...plus I keep my house very cool...so they are gone before they over ripen...very little chance of banana bread in this house.

I don't use a rack, just lay my bananas on the table. Haven't heard that about separating them, but I do know that placing them near an apple will speed up the ripening process. As for refrigerating them, that's a no-no. They're tropical, after all.

A while back there was a post about keeping bananas from ripening too fast by putting them into a bag and put them in the refrig..and that's what I have been doing. I also put them in the freezer when they get overripe and make banana bread for my son from them. It's his favorite.

No banana racks. Our nanners don't last long. We just keep then in the center of the kitchen table. But I have seen those banana hammocks. Those things are silly. We have frozen them before they make a nice treat. Harder to peel, but worth the taste. As long as they are ripe when you freeze them.

Hi GRANDPA BOB,
We don't have those hanging thingy me jig, so we leave our bananas in the fruit bowl with the rest of the fruits.

Hey Grandpa Bob! I had not heard that separating bananas would
slow done the browning process! That is interesting to know!
That is the problem that I have with them! I love them and
like to buy a large bunch, but can't keep them around long!
I try to buy them green so that I can keep them longer since
I don't go to the grocery store too often. I don't have a
rack. Does that help too? I usually put them in a bowl. Maybe
hanging them would help? I don't like to refrigerate them!

My old boss told me years ago to never set bannas onto anything plastic, as they go brown quickly. This looks a great rack. I use a metal fruit bowl, but I do not like putting fruit into the fridge, but maybe in a lot of warmer places in summer they might have to do this to stop fruit like bananas browning quickly.

During the winter, I hang my bananas in a pantry that is always cold, on hooks and it takes a long time for them to turn brown, but when they do, I don't throw them away, I make banana nut bread with them! In the summer I can't put them in the pantry because the sun heats it up too much so I have to put them in the fridge. If I leave them out on the counter on a banana hanger like you have, in no time fruit flies get on them and they rot within a couple of days.

I haven't heard of this. I used to have a banana tree similar to yours but it has dissappeared. When mine starting getting too brown I make banana bread. LOL

I use to have a banana holder. But not too sure what ever happened to it over the years. Does make sense to keep the bananas seperated to prevent them from browning too quickly.

O.K. this is all you want to know about bananas! Mash ripe bananas and they can freeze for desserts or custard or banana bread. Never put a banana in the fridge. to ripen OTHER fruit put the fruit in a paper bag with a banana and the fruit will ripen. Yes, take bananas of the hand and they will not ripen so quickly. For full flavour, eat a banana that shows a few brown spots. Bananas should not be eaten whilst still having a green tip. Bananas giver off a natural gas that ripens other fruit.Bananas are the perfect food for adults and children as they have potassium, vitamins b&C are something else that makes the brain, and thus you, feel happy.
