Are your children eating healthy enough?

I have a five year old son and I do get concerned about his nutrition. I like to try to feed him fruits and vegetables and sometimes it is hard to get him to eat the right thing. Do you think that your children are eating enough healthy foods?

I would say yes, except that they give them some bad choices at school (low fat milk and margariene instead of butter) they get to much glutamate in the food as well. They are great when it comes to eating fruit and vegetables and school even serves vegetarian food once a week and they have a great opportynity to eat much vegetables and beans at school. At home we eat okay, there are days that doesn't meet the RDI with everything, but most days they get what they need. carrotsticks are great to give as snack - most kids love it!

We don't get school lunches out here so my child goes off to school everyday laden with a bag of food for lunch plus the snack breaks. I pack lots of fruit, quite often something with rice as his prerence, and everyday a bag of chopped raw green pepper which he is addicted to. There's still a lot of veggies he objects to, usually the ones he hasn't tried and automatically dismisses but it is heartening to tuck into most vegetables with guster. As for the sweet things I make my own buns so I know what goes into them and freeze them in huge batches to add to his lunch box. Luckily crisps and things are banned at school, and sweets too.

I have to say that my little guy impresses me. He is a fruit man and will ask for that over most other things. Oh, we do have an occassional treat but I don't stock the house with them. I load up on fruits, veggies, etc. His favorite right now are corn, carrots, and broccoli. Last night at a party for our apartment he was loading his plate up with tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and raw bell peppers. He didn't even eat the bread pudding we'd given him. He's a pretty good eater. Anora

Yes, I do think my child eats healthily enough. My son is 9yrs and like children his age, he loves junk food too. I give in to his demands say about twice or thrice a week. Other than that, its home food for him. I cant make a lot of variety to tickle his taste buds, but by now he knows that mom can make only this many variety for dinner and breakfast so no point in crying over it. However, with small kids its really difficult, specially for their lunch boxes at school. I sometimes give him sandwiches with stuffings of cheese or sausage or ham or mayo and I know there are not healthy but what other options do I have? If its not that tasty, he may very well chuck it out of the window!

I don't have any young children any longer, just my adult soon and I and we have very little money to have good food, that is always healthy for us.

Most of the time my kids eat plenty healthy. There are days when they have a little more junk than they should. My son gets those Ensure drinks when I think he has not been eating well enough.

Two out of three are pretty good, the third one practically has to be tied down and force fed vegetables. She does like fruit though, thank goodness for small blessings. We give her a multi vitamin every so often to help make up for things, but I"d rather she got it from her food.

If you feel he might not be getting the stuff he needs nutritionally it is good to get a good kid vitamin so that it will help him. I know kids rather have the chips, cakes and pop tarts rather then healthy fruits, veggies and juices. We are getting my sister to change her diet slowly by adding a few things a month till the bad for her food is ousted and she will only be left with what is good for her with a occasional treat of her old favorites a few times a month but not everyday or every other day like usual.

If you are worried give him a children's vitamin. But unless you see some evidence of malnutrition don't worry to much kids tend to eat what they need, even the picky ones.
