Hiccoughs have been experienced by all. Here is a little discussion on the science of hiccups. Hiccough is a phenomenon resulting from sudden spasmodic involuntary contraction of the diaphragm with th glottis remaining closed. Keeping it simple, the diaphragm is a muscular barrier in form of a dome, that separated the chest cavity from that of the abdomen and it also helps in respiration. CAUSES: 1.The most common cause of this unpleasant phenomenon is hasty ingestion of food & fluid 2.Irritation of the nerve that innervated the diaphragm 3.Brain hemorrhages, brain tumours, kidney failures, diabetes complications, electrolyte imbalance etc can also cause hiccough 4.Some cases may be psychogenic, when a person gets too much nervous or fearful How to MANAGE ??: 1.Drink cold water 2.Pressure over eye ball 3.Pull the tongue 4.Close your mouth & nose & blow air inside 5.Rebreathing in to a paper bag 6.Local infiltration of the nerve by some anesthetics 7.Medicines like antacids, antiemetics may help. What do you do when you have hiccoughs ??

The only thing that lets me stop the hiccups is if I can get meself totally still and regulate my breathing to nice slow even breaths. I've tried water and other various tricks, but that's the only thing that seems to work. I don't get them much anymore. I used to get them once in a while for a whole day at a time. They would come and go, throughout the day. By the end of the day it felt tlike someone had been pummeling me in the gut. I've heard of people who have them for years, that must be miserable.
