Everybody was so helpful with my last question, I thought I'd try another problem I have. Round steak. I've made jerky with it. But is there anything else I can do to make it taste even vaguely edible? I've marinated it in bbq sauce, zesty Italian dressing, and something I can't remember. Still tough as nails, and about as tasty as shoe leather. Can you help me? Please? I would be so obliged!

round steak is good if cooked right. don't mean to be knocking your cooking. i just salt & pepper mine. roll it in flour. brown it in some oil on both sides, add a can of golden mushroom soup& some water & let it cook real slow. you can put it in the oven & cook it to, i like to add onions, green pepper & a can of tomatoes & serve it w/rice , noodles or creamed potatoes.

I have admitted to all and sundry I can't cook worth a hoot. That's why I'm asking for advice! Do you add the can of tomatoes, etc after it gets fully cooked or with the mushroom soup? Does it really go with the cream of mushroom well? Thanks for taking the time to respond to this.

Thanks, I'll give that a try too. (One of the drawbacks to buying in quantity, is you get a lot of cuts you don't like)

When i use round steak i like to make Fajitas with it or pepper steak. The key is to keep it moist as it dries out quickly or can become tough. I season mine with salt, pepper and garlic. Hope this helps your round steak.

I was just talking to my mom and she had a great suggestion for really tough cuts of meat. Here's the 'recipe' (my mom isn't really one for point form instructions!) I used a Pyrex rectangular cake pan and laid two thicknesses (is that a word?) of foil in it, long enough to fold over and seal. Put your blade steaks or a roast in the bottom and throw a bunch of salt and pepper on it. Cut up potatoes, carrots, celery in chunks and quarter an onion. Put all the veggies on top of the meat and throw more salt and pepper on top of that. I filled my coffee cup up with hot water and added maybe 3 or 4 tsp. of beef oxo to it, stirred it and dumped that in. Seal up the foil and put it in the oven at 290, I don't know why, but I set the oven at 290 and it worked fine. I put it in at 12:30 and it was done at 6. You can't peek because that will let all the steam out. Next time you go to Safeway buy some crappy meat and everybody will think you're a cooking genius. I haven't tried this yet but I definitely plan to.

I think it would be close, maybe a little warmer. That might be what helps so much with the toughness.

It sounds great! I wonder if the low heat is so it will resemble a crockpot scenario? What do you think?

I use round steak for pepper steak. Cut it up, dredge it in flour and a little pepper and brown it on both sides in a frying pan. Put the browned slices in a large skillet, with some green peppers and onions, and enough water to cover the entire bottom of skillet, cover and let simmer for 2.5 to 3 hours, adding water as needed to keep the steak from sticking and burning. During the last 20 mins or so I add some more green peppers and onions to be served with the meat. What's left in th skillet will make a great gravy for mashed potatoes and for the steak if you're a gravy person. The key to round steak, I believe, is either tenderize it or cook it slowly over a long long time.

My favorite way to cook round steak is to put it in the crockpot and add brown gravy to it and let it cook at least 8 hours. It is always tender and the gravy adds some flavor to it. I prefer it that way. I have also made it with Lipton onion soup and with cream of mushroom soup in with it. The crockpot makes it tender as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the idea. I'm making a list of all these and will try out each one.
