appliances are really quite expensive. and with a tight budget and a lot of expences sometimes i like to buy second hand appliances instead of buying brand new ones. the price is not that high but i am not sure of the quality for it is used already. have you ever bought a second hand appliance that you were happy of. or you experience something you bought that made you angry for it is just a waste of money?

That depends. Is it in good condition. If it is and the price is reasonable. why not. That is also the reason why garage sales are usually a hit right? In the philippines, there are a lot of stores that actually sell surplus Television sets from Korea. If you ask me. I say that its a waste of money, also a waste of time to have it set up and buy accessories and after a short while it would go kaput.

of course i will check something first before i buy. i wont buy something that is not in a good condition for that would really be waste of money and time. i have a freind and his business is video games and he purchased a lot of surplus television for his video games and so far the tvs are working perfectly fine. maybe we need to find a good store and be picky at the same time. thanks for the response and welcome to mylot yelo, hope you like it here like most of us do

Hi roni. Whenever I want to buy appliances I prefer the brand new. I am just hesitant to buy second hand items and be sorry at the end if it is not functioning well. If I buy a new one I can still ask the shop where I bought it from to replace it in case of any problem with its function. Return and exchange policy here in Australia is quite good, consumers are protected.

hi alicia welcome to mylot lol. there are appliances shop also here like Robinson's and SM has this return and exchange pollicy but you will still pay plus a thousand pesos i think add to the price of the itme you are buying. sounds like a holdup for me. i mean if the item you bought will run smoothly so the + thousand will just go to them. you can not use that. right? you can only use that if the item you buy was not working as expected. well what can i say..... only in the philippines. lol. thanks for the response. glad to have you here

I can't remember having bought second hand appliances. My opinion about second hands have lower quality and longevity, especially those electric and/or electronic appliances. I fear to experience what others had experienced which gave them headaches and wasted more money for repairs because surely second hand appliances have no warranty. I am planning to buy a slightly used or second hand mobile phone, but I have second thoughts. I do fear It might give me a problem after using it for a month or two.

Hello roni. How are you? I have never bought used appliances. For one thing, it's a little risky to buy second-hand appliances. You're not really sure how long it will last. And besides, if I do have to buy a brand new one, it's usually the electric fans. Before I make a purchase, I make a price comparison first. Then, I save up for weeks for that amount. My husband did buy a second-hand dvd player from his co-worker three years ago. He was told it was practically brand new because the former owner barely used that player. He bought it for more than P2000. Unfortunately, that player refused to work. I told my husband to return it to the owner because it was obvious he sold us that player, knowing that it won't work! But the owner refused to give us back our money. Insisting that it does work. We then, realized he barely used it because it doesn't work in the first place!

I don't mind buying second hand goods, once I got a second hand washing machine it lasted me years then it was a cooker and is still going strong, personally I think it is better than these new ones...so far I have had no problems with second hand goods and as you say they are cheaper which these days we need to be tight where money is concerned, also I get a lot of smart clothes from Charity shops and think they will flourish more these days, as new things are still so expensive....littleowl

Hello roniroxas, As much as possible, we would like to buy brand new appliances, but there are times we bought second hand/used appliances. We bought some from my sister and my friend coz they were going to migrate, and so far we did not think that it's a waste of money since til now we're still using them.

as much as possible too nhey, iwant a brand new. for it has a guarantee. they will fix it if something goes wrong. i can blame someone if the appliance is not working as expected and a lot more things that i can bounce back to when i have a problem. but it still bothers me about how expensive brand new appliances cost. i am a single mom of four children. my first born is at college already and expences are too much even i budget it so so so well. it is not easy to decide to buy brand new if you know the budget will not allow. thanks for the response

I think you really have to look at it on a case-by-case basis. I bought a deep freezer at a yard sale for $25 not too long after my wife and I got married. The man I bought it from assured me that it worked. I wrote him a check for it, and he told me to bring it home and try it to make sure, and to bring it back to him if it didn't work like it should, and that he would give me my check back. So, I brought it home and plugged it in...That freezer served us well for over five years. We used it until the lid rusted and started having trouble sealing. My wife's boss was needing a small deep freezer to use at the restaurant she works at, so she told him about the one we had. It still worked fine, but we didn't trust it to keep our food in due to the fact that it would be days or even a week or more at times between the times we opened the freezer. We didn't want to take the risk of going out there one day and having all of our food thawed out and ruined because the lid didn't seal well. My wife's boss offered to buy the freezer from us. He said that since they would be opening it multiple times per day, he would be able to make sure that the food was staying frozen properly. Without knowing how much we paid for it originally, he offered me $25 for it. So, to sum it all up...I bought the freezer for $25, used it for well over five years, then sold it to her boss for $25...making me my money back. I think that was a pretty good return on a $25 investment. One a side note...he bought the freezer from me over a year ago, and they are still using it today. I don't know how long he will get use out of it, but I think he has gotten his money's worth out of it already... I have other examples of selling people used appliances as well. I found a washing machine in a shed that we were cleaning out and demolishing. We tested it out, and after discovering that it worked, I sold it to a lady I used to work with for $50. This was over a year ago, and she is still using it as far as I know. My father-in-law sells used appliances to people all the time. He is a retired service technician who used to work for SEARS, so he know how to make sure they are working properly, or how to repair them before he sells them. It is definitely possible to purchase a good used appliance. You just have to be careful and use a little judgment. There is always some risk that you will end up with one that is worthless, but you have to decide for yourself whether or not the risk is worthwhile.

People of my age are used to living a frugal life. We buy appliances only when the old one cannot be repaired after several services. The new appliances are keeping popping up,but I am happy with limitting to the absolute musts. I do not have the dish washer, or the vacuum cleaner, as I believe some homework is good for health, money can be used for other purposes, and lastly I do not have too much room to store.

i dont have a dish washer too, i have four children and they help with washing the dishes. i dont havea vacuum cleaner as well. we still use the feather duster, wet rag for mopping and broom to sweep. i agree with you sayingthat some home work are good for the healthso do it in manual labor. thanks for the response

I think some second hand appliances can be used well for someone, they are not all bad, just make sure it's safe for you to use and will do nothing harm to you, then why buy a new one while the old one is do,it can help you to conserve some money and you can use the money on the things more important to you.
