I woke up this morning and the first thing I hear is that an elderly person died frozen to death because his electricity was cut on account the person owned 1,000$.
There should be a law like in Canada..the electricity is not allowed to be cut off in winter.
Even if they were in their right to cut it off..how uncaring can one be to do it in winter!!!
There is a investigation that will be held for the non respect of an elderly person..ya ya.. an elderly person had to die for an investigation of non respect!!!It should be mandated that electricity cannot be cut off in winter, after all the elderly have hardly any income because the gouvernement doesn't raise their pension with the rising costs of living.
I'm lucky ..I have a compensation plan with the electric company, I pay only 41$ a month because my consumption is waaaay down. But of course if I move out I will have to pay what is left to pay but this way I can at least be sure that I will never have a high bill and unable to pay.
I save over 1000 a year by..unplugging all electrical appliances that I don't use ever second, like toaster, blender, washing and drying machine, micro wave. I don't use anymore aromatic plug ins, i close every light, I lower the heat when I sleep.
Do you know that if you keep a night light on all the time..it costs 58$ just for one? Wow, one wouldn' t think so.
I don't leave the light porch on ever, I don't need it as I have a street light just next to my entry. I close my pc and even my speakers..everythig that I can close I do. Not only do I contribute to saving money but contribute to the enviroment too.
Think about it. Unplug all you don't use every second. No trouble repluging in your toaster or micro wave, or blender etc. If I could unplug my stove and refridgerator I would do that too hehehe.
Now I am looking for a house by the lake with a fire place..so I will save more on heat and be comfotable even if the electricity should fail because of a storm..of course I will use only ecological logs to not smog the air.
Too bad that elderly person had no one to call or was that person even capable of asking for help? Many have no more people as friends die off, marry, move away and your neighbour doesn't give a hoot about you anymore.
I realized that myself a long time ago as I don't have friends I used to, they are dead or married or moved away and I moved alot too.
Today I am 65 and if I died ..no one would know. So I decided that I would call CLSC as there is a service ..free..they call the elderly or invalid etc..every morning to make sure you are okay.
Do you know any elderly that are living alone? Do make a point to go and visit or call everyday. What's a few seconds of your time to give a call..you might save a life!!We are in an uncaring world..everyone for themselves. No longer do the children care for their elderly parents. In my family long ago, it wasn't that way..we cared even for eldely relatives, cousins, uncles etc. Now, we don' and as I move around alot, well know one knows where I am half the time..lol..but I do watch out for my neighbours..especially a real nice couple.
The other day I noticed that 2 days the walk wasn't cleaned so I went and knocked on the door. They were okay, just didn't have to go out and so didn't clean the walk. They appreciated that I came to check them out..so when I go out to shovel..I do their walk way..whats an extra few shovels if it will help a elderly man having less to do it?

that is sad, i think they could have worked with her to keep her warm and the power on. most older people feel bad and won't go and ask family for help. if it was my parents or grandparnets i would help in away i could.
these days times are hard and older people and even people who are on disablty is hard. i know i ended up having to go back to work because of money issues.

Companies don't care about anything but money and families don't care about the elderly.
My kids don't bother with me at all. Who calls me to see if I am okay? Who calls me to invite me for the weekend? Of all people..my daughters in law!!

well that is just wrong for your kids. too me i see it as this. our parnets took care of us well we were growing up, and when they got older we should look out for them and help them out like they did with us, it's an reverse role.
tell your kids to straighten up..

You can't tell your kids to straighten up when they are adults. They have their own lives, are rich and care only for themselves.
But one day they will pay the price. They also will grow old and their children will also ignore them because they are showing their kids that grandparents are not to be taken care of..so they will get what they sow.

I've found a very interesting and useful information in your discussion and I want to thank you for it.Now I see that elderly people are treated inappropriately all over the world, and not only in my country.I wonder if this problem exists worldwide or just in western culture?I know that from the cynical point of view they are just an "old stuff" the society is trying to get rid of because the world belongs to young and beautiful. ha ha ha. who feeded those young bustar8s when they were just born?Who created those goods and made the system work? Those who are tired and want to have some rest now, have some respect for what they did to this ungrateful society.I get angry when it goes about about any kind of discrimination.sometimes doing good isn't that hard as it seems. It takes only a few minutes.
Good luck to you and take care of yourself.

Here hundreds of women work for a very small salary like 400-450 dollars per month.I could only imagine what will happen when they retire. They'll get only peanuts and they'll have to pay bills, buy clothes, food. Now they are young and they think it's enough because their husbands get three times more, but it's like living on the edge of a volcano..
I say to my student friends:don't think your husband will bring you everything. You must be independent if you want to survive.
