Weatherize your home!

Who knew it actually does some good? We built our own home, and we went the extra mile in insulation and everything. We try to save money, and it doesn't save to lose heat. But I just bought some weatherizing strips, and put them around the doors. Imagine my surprise when the furnace didn't run hardly at all for a day!! I really thought we'd done a good job on this house. Imagine! What about you?

well good for you! now you know that weather proofing your house is actually cost efficient in the long run. i wish builders would have taken that into account when they built our house! :-(

I've always known that. My problem was we did it!! But I didn't take into account that that was 14 years ago... Guess the house settled just like we did... I didn't expect it to change, since we knew we did a good job. (I hate getting older. Can't overhaul like we can the house.) I just feel bad that it took me so long to realize it. I still had to fight the hubby on it. He KNEW he did a good job, so wasn't about to redo and admit a problem. Sigh.

My husband is a builder and he also always goes the extra mile with insulation. It really does make a difference...i noticed a huge difference when he re-finsished the entire basement...no more cold air coming through the bulk head...

There is this black weather stripping that is pretty easy to put in. It only costs $3.00 for a package. That one package did a full size door. I saw how my hubby put it on the door, so I can do it now. I'm not sure how to do the windows. He said the windows don't have a problem. But I'm gonna go to a hardware store and ask them to show me how to put it on. I was surprised how easy it was to do the doors. It's a peel and stick thing. Where the door is pressed up against the ridge after it's shut, that's where you stick the stripping. I thought it was some complicated sort of thing! I'm sure the windows are just as easy, after I see someone else do it!

I don't know it has proven me wrong to weatherize my home. Last year we didn't do anything to get ready for the winter months this year we covered our windows cover a door we don't use got those strips put them up, cocked some of our windows that are not in the greatest shape and our electric bill is much higher than it was last year. We even keep the furnace lower this year than last! And that didn't help either.

That doesn't sound right. Did your electric go up, as far as how much they're charging per kilowatt (right word? Yes,no?) Our charges per kw went up, but we're trying not to use as much electricity. So it wasn't too bad. Our furnace isn't electric, it's propane.

Wow, that's great. I really need to get under my house. I haven't been under there in years and I need to look at the insulation, pipes etc see if there is anything I need to do to cut my bill.
