Mercury Found in High Fructose Corn Syrup

"Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies." Why does the FDA allow this to be in so many of the products we consume daily? They tell us to cut back on fish because of the mecury in it, and then they allow high fructose corn syrup to be in nearly EVERYTHING we eat or drink!

Hi Bd200789! Goodness, never knew that! how could they allow that? It is really important that we read the label but sometimes, there are hidden ingredients that are not being declared unhealthy for us consumers. It is really great if we will all be made aware of things like this so we can be more conscious and careful of what we purchase. thanks for sharing this. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

I can't believe they allow it to be put in food.

That is really sad for us consumers. They should be protecting the consumers and they are not doing their job well.

Hi Bd200789, These days we can't eat anything because its bad for us so why do they put crp in our food then? we should go back to the old days of growing everything and start keeping livestock, at least we will know what we feed the livestock with and what is in our food. Tamara

I agree with tamarafireheart. We need to go back to buying and raising our own foods. All the preservatives and what i call convience foods are just not healthy to us. Until we can all stand together as a nation and just say NO... we will continue to be polluted with unnecessary chemicals.

I am afraid that the fda is trying to enforce a secret population control by bumping us off with chemicals...there are too many cases of this....why, do we have them if we are going to get poison like mercury anyway? I dont trust them anymore either...if possible....try to eat natural foods and avoid as much processing as possible....this is too freaky....ugh!

I know. It doesn't make any sense. Here's the link to the article if you want to read it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html

Since I am diabetic, I try to avoid things with high fructose corn syrup (I guess that means M and Ms are out) but it is amazing how much stuff has it in. I have to go to my cupboard and check all what we bought. I mean it will probably have to cost us more in the long one. I do wonder how much damage was done to our bodies before we found out the danger. No wonder many of us are not living as long as our parents and not having as many kids and some of us are not having any.

Yikes this really sucks...I mean when you think of how many of our food items might have that??...from juices, ice creams, sugary snacks, yogurts...gee, and then most of us wonder why we might develop some medical problems when all along we've been practically poisoning ourselves. What's with the FDA anyway? I was reading some other articles about this in general how HFCS triggers obesity and diabetes to begin with and they've known this for YEARS.

I try to avoid high-fructose corn syrup as much as possible. Similar to trans-fats, it is just not a naturally occurring substance. Not that sugar is all that good for you, but when you modify it, it just gets worse! Sadly, it is almost impossible to completely avoid HFCS unless you go entirely with natural foods. In today's society, that is just not convenient for most people. Returning to nature - farm-fresh, locally grown products - would do wonders for our world, beyond just the health benefits of removing these man-made toxins from our diets. No, mercury is not man-made, but trans fats and HFCS are... In my opinion, these are the two worst things ever approved for human consumption - followed closely by NutraSweet and splenda. Go natural and use less! Thanks for posting this discussion. I hadn't heard the report prior to reading this and following the link to the article.

It is amazing isn't it. I wonder what they will do now, if anything. It is getting pretty scary.

That is scary. I don't eat very many processed foods and stay away from sweetened drinks, but I have a weakness for sweets, gummy bears and baked goods. I'm going to have to start paying attention to what is in them.
