does anyone know of any free-to-sign-up game sites where you can get money, but the games aren't all classic gambling games(like poker, bleh)???

I agree, it's quite boring, but I give few tips for you, first of all, collect Mars dollars and build up your defense, that other members can't attack against you. And if you want to get MD fast, you can build up your weapons so you can attack against other players. You can build up those when you find an outpost from map.
